I have tonsillitis and I have been on penicillin for 5 days, I had blood in phlegm last night and this morning, is this normal? I'm worried
Ive had tonsillitis for 5 days now my doctor has given me penacillin but now im coughing up white hard lumps of phlegm with blood spots in it??
Tonsils: If you have been taking the penicillin for 5 days and are getting worse, I would do two things. First, get the doc to change the Rx to an antibiotic in a different family because you may have a 'resistant' bacterial strain. I would switch to erythromycin 10mg/kg x 3 doses/day. Second, see an ENT doc. Your smoking puts you at risk for something far worse, AND, you probably need your tonsils out ...Read more

Had tonsillitis week & on erythromycin. Getting rapidly worse -green spots covering tonsils, blood phlem, chills/fever, ear pain. Is this normal?
Maybe not: for bacterial throat infection that will respond to antibiotic, would expect some improvement within 3-4 days. If taking an antibiotic for a week without improvement, and an infection is present, then the infection is either due to something other than bacteria or due to a strain resistant to the antibiotic used. keep the prescribing physician up to date. ...Read more

Woke up with post nasal drip and sinus pressure/headache, phlegm is clear, no fever or other symptoms any ideas, had tonsillitis but it's gone now..
What would experts say? Could a blood test taken for tonsillitis show other infections in the body too?
So I had a tonsillitis about a week ago. It was cured after 5days because of the meds ,but then yesterday I started spitting blood. Help pls?
Prob NL recovery: This is prob normal. Your scabs on your tonsils are drying up & sloughing at about this time into your recovery. So minor bleeding is OK. Watch for sig bleeding though. Any sig bright red bleeding or pumping blood is an emergency. Get to the ER ASAP if you see that kind of sig bleeding. Eat a soft diet - nothing that could scratch your scabs. And you could gently swish & swallow ice water. ...Read more
When you go to clinic and do blood test for things like tonsillitis, can they see if you have hiv?
It depends: Some clinics are more sensitive to the possibility that an infection could potentially be HIV infection. Often you will be told (or asked) if someone is thinking about doing an HIV test. If you are concerned, it is ok to request a test. The cdc recommends that everyone (teenagers through adults) gets tested for HIV so don't be shy. ...Read more
I keep getting tonsillitis, despite X 2 Penicillin V prescriptions. AOS blood tests "upper range of normal" what treatment would help?
Don't overtreat: Penicillin won't prevent future attacks, and is appropriate only if there's good reason to think this is strep throat. Antistreptolysin O titers are useful only if actual rheumatic fever is a consideration; don't over-interpret these or any other labs especially when they're in reference range or you'll go crazy. Ask about tonsillectomy given that there's variable evidence / thought. ...Read more

My son who is 24 years old was prescribed ceftin (cefuroxime) for tonsillitis and has had diarrhea with blood for a while now. How long can that last?
Might be serious: Antibiotic related diarrhea can sometimes be a sign of a secondary infection in the bowel. This is particularly worrisome if the diarrhea is bloody. I’ve got tonsillitis but it’s not getting better my doctor said if it isn’t better by Tuesday I need to get a blood test but it’s so sore I can’t wait?
Doctor can recheck: Throat pain can be from strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), mono, a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees a doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to see about antibiotics). The doctor can swab the throat for a 5-minute test to check for strep. ...Read more
