4yr old son has tongue tie, speech delay & gap in lower front teeth. Dentist recommends lingual frenectomy. Will this help?

Maby: Most speech and language specialists will do an oral motor exam as part of their evaluation. If the tip if the child's tongue can easily reach the sites within the mouth needed to form the letters a frenulotomy may not help. If you haven't had a speech evaluation done, I would do so. The therapist can help you decide to proceed with the procedure if they feel it would be helpful. Read more

2 week old just had his tongue tie clipped. He has been fussy all day. Is that normal? How long should that last for?

For a day or so: ASK YOURSELF how long you would have a sore mouth if this "clipping" were done to you.....

Not to worry
If fussiness continues over 48 hours get the baby checked out
Hope this is helpful

Can there be a speech delay in asperger's syndrome?

ASD 1, formerly AS,: Has "no significant language delay" by old dsm-iv criteria. Language is, indeed, atypical in prosody (inflections, rate, rhythm) ; pragmatics (the conversational, turn-taking aspects of verbal communication). Non-verbal communication is impaired, also. Pedantic ("little professor"), one-sided monologues about narrow, restricted areas of interest ; "hyperlexia" (early reading) are common. Read more

Does having a speech delay mean that the person is autistic?

Does having a speech delay mean that the person is autistic?

No.: Hi billybear! No, having a speech delay does not mean a person is autistic. It could be a sign of autism, but it could just be a speech/language disorder. There are also some other disorders of childhood that could result in a speech delay so it is important to have the problem evaluated. The hallmark symptom of autism is impairment in social functioning so speech delay could be present w/o autism. Read more

Toddler speech delay and arm flapping autistic or not?

Toddler speech delay and arm flapping autistic or not?

Needs evaluation!: Bring your toddler in to your pediatrician and voice your concerns about his development. We screen for a variety of early behaviors that increase risk. Does your child smile and interact with others? Does he gesture and point? Does he seem to understand what you say? How is his hearing? Does he have good eye contact with you and others? What does his preschool teacher think? Best of Luck! Read more

Did this cause speech delay? My teen would masturbate in bed next to my toddler (no sexual intent)and wouldn't let tod go to living room If asked

Might contribute: This is a highly pathological family situation. This particular kind of event isn't likely to cause speech delay, but the overall horrible situation in the family certainly could contribute to it. You need to discuss this frankly with the toddler's pediatrician. Good luck to all concerned, especially your kids. Read more

Is it possible that there ever be a speech delay in asperger's syndrome?

No language delay: Asperger's (now called autism spectrum disorder) does not involve language/speech delay and this is an important differentiating factor compared with classical autism. That said, the term is not used in the latest diagnostic manual (dsm-5). As above, the new term autistic spectrum disorder includes both of these at this point in dsm-5. Read more

3yr. Old daughter has speech delay. Would a frenectomy help her?

3yr. Old daughter has speech delay. Would a frenectomy help her?

Depends on situation: Most garbled speech in a 3yo has less to do with the tongue than on the manner the kid started using words. If the tip of the tongue can touch the top of the mouth & jut out past the lower teeth, it is unlikely a frenulotomy would be needed. If you contact the "child find " program in your location they should assess your childs speech & advise you on her needs. Read more

Should we get our daughter tested for speech delay? She is 26 months, has about 75 words and is speaking 2-4 word sentences with the ones she has.

Should we get our daughter tested for speech delay? She is 26 months, has about 75 words and is speaking 2-4 word sentences with the ones she has.

Sounds normal: If she qualifies as high risk as a former premi or other category there may be a early childhood program that will screen her for free. After age 3, the public schools operate Child Find programs to identify such kids. Only half of what she says should be understood by strangers at 2. What you describe is not worrisome, but there are resources out there. Read more

Son 4 years old and only 32 pounds, eats well, sleeps well, has slightly low ferritin at 10, is slightly hyper and has speech delay, can he have worms?

Could be normal: But he is around the 5th to 10th percentile depending on his age (4-1/2 etc). His stature alone is not concerning but has his growth been normal? It is easy to test for parasites with a stool sample and a blood sample. Normally it is not just the ferritin that is low but the hemoglobin too! This can also be seen with eosinophilia (increased type of blood cells). Easy to test for and treat. Read more
