Not much: I look at peoples mouths and tongues all day long and I've seen all types of tongues with all types of papilla. There is a huge variety of what is normal and as long as the tongue is not painful or in other ways bothering you there's nothing to worry about. Read more
Probably nothing: Certain papillae of the tongue are normally larger than others, in particular the circumvallate papillae in the back of the tongue. If there are no taste disorders or other abnormalities its more than likely a normal variant. Read more

Is there a surgical procedure that reduces the length of the tongue papillae? If yes, do plastic surgeons do it, is it a rare medical practice?

Fungus?: It's impossible to make a diagnosis based just on one sign. However, the majority of common white lesions of the tongue are fungal. It's usually "candidiasis, " or what you might call "thrush." that's not something that easily goes away by itself. You should see a dentist & get some medication.
