Dry mouth, allergies: Tongue papilla require moistness for proper function. If you suffer from dry mouth, do not drink enough water, or have had an allergic reaction to food, the papillae will enlarge. Probably normal: Everyone has 10-14 large papillae (circumvallate papillae) on the far back of the tongue. They can be hard to see, and when first noticed it is easy to believe they have just appeared or enlarged. Google "circumvallate papillae photos" and compare with what you have noticed. Maybe a yeast infection (thrush, candida) and could improve with a one time Diflucan (fluconazole) tablet (prescription). If is goes away after that, the diagnosis is confirmed, and then it will be important to investigate why are you having yeast infections in your mouth; immune system deficiency, undiagnosed diabetes?
