Tolerance To Alprazolam
Need some recommendations for calming panic since I have built up a tolerance to xanax (alprazolam)?
Antidepressants: First and foremost, ssri and snri drugs are really the best drugs to prevent panic attacks, and work reasonably well for this. Benzodiazepines were never meant to be taken chronically for what is an intermittent acute problem like panic attacks. However, if tolerance is present. Alprazolam or Lorazepam (or any benzo really) will still work - just needs a higher dose. Psychotherapy also can work. ...Read more
When one takes a drug, such as heroin or alcohol, repeatedly, 'tolerance' develops because more of the drug is needed to give the same effect on the body/brain; e.g. Liver enzymes r stimulated to metabolize the drug faster and faster. There may be a strong genetic predisposition to addiction, some studies suggesting that 1 of 10 people will become dependent on alcohol or some ...Read more

The high tolerance and use of xanax, (alprazolam) a notoriously short-acting drug where when it wears off, worse insomnia occurs, may be the cause of your sleep problems. Adding more drugs to problems being caused by drugs is a sure way to enter a vicious cycle of escalating doses, escalating dependency, increasing side effects and problems with addiction and its complications. ...Read more

How rarely do you have to take benzodiazepines such as Xanax (alprazolam) in order to not develop a tolerance?
Just not everyday: If you skip days fairly often, e.g., 2 or 3 times a week, you are unlikely to develop a tolerance over time. Any skipped day gives your body a chance to "reset". If you take it too many days in a row and then skip a day, you'll have withdrawal or rebound anxiety on the skipped day, and you'll know in the future to skip days more often. Psychological dependence is a different matter of course. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How long can one be on benzodiazepines hypothetically when starting on a low dose (e.G Xanax (alprazolam) 0.25 mg) until tolerance induction?
I take Xanax (alprazolam) 0.25 like six times a day because I created tolerance and I am in the process of detox, will this cause GERD from taking so many pills?
Detox & reflux?: Number if tablets has no effect on reflux. However, if you are being tapered down on your Xanax (alprazolam), (alprazolam) you may experience anxiety. Not drugs alone: Consider psychotherapy in addition to your meds. Drugs alone are often not sufficient to control generalized anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy can work well with your meds to get your anxiety under control. If none of the drugs you have tried are helping you, you may need to taper off them with your doctor's assistance. All drugs have side effects. ...Read more
