Toenail Detached From Nail Bed
Bandaid and topical: The best treatment would be to get the wound assessed by a doctor. With that said if the there are no lacerations in the nail bed and the rest of the nail is attached firmly, no treatment would be necessary except for maybe a bandaid with topical antibiotic cream for a few days. If the nail is loose it may need to be taken off by a doctor or it may fall off on its own soon. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Had infections at nailbed & ingrown nail. saw podiatrist for ingrown nail 6 mth ago nail now yellow & broken. Will it grow out? Can I use fake nail?
Nail regrowth: As long as the nailbed has not been damaged or removed, nails should regrow with time (lots of time). Sometimes the new growth is characterized by discoloration or distortion, and this is usually permanent. Occlusion of the exposed nailbed with artificial nails and chemicals may further damage the nailbed and inhibit any new growth that might occur. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Broke big toe on 8/12. Detached toenail. Skin is falling off in sheets from ALL toes on the foot. No cast. Walking boot, now surgical shoe. Why?
Quit Sloughing off.: Skin sloughing, particularly after a period of immobilization and departure from one's daily bathing routine, is almost a given when the immobilization and swelling end. Layers of dead skin cells that are normally sloughed during one's daily routine have piled up and are revealed as these skin "sheets". One can only imagine how much skin is shedded daily by your body daily. ...Read more
Son has one big toe nail that has fallen off & the other big toe nail is lifting. No trauma, fungus ruled out , nail flat/spoon, ideas of cause?
I will provide an : Idea, it is a little difficult without seeing the actual foot. I do believe that fungus and trauma are the most common causes. Trauma does not have to mean a heavy object fell on the toe. Repetitive micro trauma like a toe hitting the end of a shoe when running etc could be a cause, and nails can be negative for fungus due to false negatives. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
If you have...: Artificial nails, remove them. A common cause is damage from the adhesive applied to hold the acrylics. Then, keep your nails away from soap & water and harsh chemicals as much as possible (wear gloves). Take biotin (one of the b vitamins) 5000 units per day. Use nail polish, either one color coat or 2 clear coats. Be patient, it may take several weeks to bring your nails back to normal. ...Read more

Because the nail: Grows back exactly in the same way each time. If the nail borders are curled in, when they get to be a certain length they cause pressure at the tip of the toe. Break through the skin and you get the infection. Cut back the nail and the infection clears, but its a matter of time before it grows back to where it was. Stop the problem by a matrixectomy procedure, usually performed in the office. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

How do I treat a torn big toenail from the flesh but still attached on the sides? It's torn away down the middle of the nail bed and bled pretty bad.
Torn toenail: The best way to treat a torn toenail is to keep it clean, apply an antiseptic, and place a dressing over that will protect it. The problem is that it will take approximately one year for the nail to grow and replace the torn portion with a new nail, especially if the nail is torn back to its growth center. Your podiatrist can numb you and safely remove it so that it is not snagging your clothing. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Should i trim off the separated nail before applying antifungals to my toenails so it can get to the affected nail bed?
My toenail has grown back strange. A mound of skin-like material is growing out of the nail bed. So the toe nail grows up and over the mound.
Toe bone injury.: It sounds as though that "mound of skin" may be the result of injuring the toe bone just under the nail bed. Occasionally, the bone, when injured responds by a sudden growth spurt. As it grows upward, it raises the nail bed up and can cause a nail distortion as you have described. An r-ray will usually confirm the event. The treatment involves removing the boney spur. Known as subungual exostosis. ...Read more
Can soaking in epson salt be safe to use on a toenail that has been partially torn away from the nail bed?
Big toenails removed. Dr prescribed naftin (naftifine) 2% 45g for 8 months on the nail bed. That seems way too long. Box says 2 weeks. Thoughts?
Mycotic nails: Actually 8 months of therapy for a fungus nail involving the great toes is not a long time since it takes about a year for the nail to completely regrow. Topical treatments however have limited benefit. Oral antifungals like Lamisil (terbinafine) have produced better outcomes. Current literature supports pulse dosing over the course of a year. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Had ingrown toenail on big toe, removed it. where toenail came off nail bed it wont grow back.i have half toenail on big toe.why won't it grow back.Ty?
In the Details.: Some toenail surgeries will allow the toenail to regrow. But, there are procedures that permanently stop the nail from regrowing. This variation is usually explained before the surgery is done and your consent given. Having said that, some times the nail root is stunted during the nail removal procedure. This can temporarily slow regrowth of the involved nail. You might check with the surgeon. ...Read more
