Red doesn't diagnose: Red is but one thing we look at when visualizing an ear drum. Red alone does not an ear infection make. An ear drum can be red if child has fever, is crying, holding breath, etc. We also look at landmarks, how the light reflexes, whether the ear drum moves, whether there is fluid behind the drum. Hard to say: The first teeth to erupt are the lower front teeth and these typically do not cause ear pain. Babies that are teething will drool a lot and be cranky. Inflammation: Is the cause of swimmers ear. The skin gets wet and boggy and inflamed and it could bleed from that or if he picks it at all it could bleed. If he had a middle ear infection as well and the eardrum perforated it could bleed. None of these are terrible problems. Get it checked.: Check for signs of infection: ^'ed redness, warmth, swelling. ^'ed tenderness, pus, red streaking, swollen lymph nodes or fever. Recommend keeping piercing in place unless directed by Dr (if removed – drainage tract will close up w ^'ed risk of abscess formation). Call Dr for medical evaluation.
