Mother has gallstones but won't operate as she has heart disease, any other option?

Dissolution Therapy: If mom is having pain due to the gallstones and felt to be a poor candidate for surgery, it may be worth trying to dissolve the gallstones using medication (ursodiol). This is only suitable for small, non calcified stones and takes months to work. If she has a severe attack, an interventional radiologist can place a tube into the gallbladder to rx the blockage (percutaneous cholecystostomy). ...Read more

To operate hip fracture surgery how much minimum % heart should function for a women @ 77 yrs?

7 METS: There is no set limit for heart function reserve, but we generally like patients to have no active heart disease within the last 6 months and be able to exert themselves to a level of 7 metabolic equivalents. If you cannot or haven't done exercise to this level then additional testing may be necessary. Before surgery you will have a comprehensive eval to make sure that you are a good candidate. ...Read more

I, m 31, had stress test/ecogram of heart 4 months ago, signs were great. Can I develop an aortic aneurysm since then? I'v having mid chest/ back pain

Yes: Anything can develop. The stress test was a moment in time. However, a stress test looks for blockages in the coronary arteries of your heart, not an aortic aneurysm. Symptoms notPhysical: diagnoses. I do not understand the CT scan choice; an expensive X-Ray with radiation which is rarely useful vs. far more useful options. As a cardiologist, I can feel my heart in my chest on focus, or by gently pressing on my chest (in area called the PMI) 24/7. Symptoms (perceived in brain) & what is physically happening are 2 very different issues; yet used to sell public lots of expensive tests ...Read more

Ok, is it possible to engage in vigorous physical activity with bad heart valve and or aortic aneurysm without experiencing symptoms?

Ok, is it possible to engage in vigorous physical activity with bad heart valve and or aortic aneurysm without experiencing symptoms?

Not likely: The cardiac valve problem, especially aortic or mitral, will cause shortness of breath issues which would make it unlikely to continue what your were doing. The aortic aneurysm would have little to no symptoms with activity. Doesn't mean that the aneurysm can't rupture, in which case your symptoms would be pain and likely death. Very unlikely to happen unless the aneurysm is greater than 5 cm. ...Read more
