Whats transcranial magnetic stimulation?

Treats Depression: The brain is an electric organ as much as it is a chemical one. Tms "activates" a specific part of the brain which relieves depression. It is safe and effective. It has been used to study and treat depression since the 1980s. It is given 5 days a week, 20minutes a session, for 4-6 weeks and can be very expensive. ...Read more

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Definition)

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an energy-based therapy that is proposed to work through electromagnetic induction, which modifies neuroexcitability. It has been used in patients with autism spectrum disorders, depression, epilepsy, and Tourette syndrome. ...Read more

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms)?

For depression: TMS is a treatment for depression. It is very well tolerated and may work when medications do not. In one study, about 60% get better w/ the treatment and about 40% have no symptoms of depression after the treatment. It works by stimulating a part brain which modulates mood, called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. It is beginning to be covered by more insurances. I highly recommend it. ...Read more

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation?

Electromagnetic rx: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms) is a noninvasive method to cause depolarization or hyperpolarization in the neurons of the brain. Tms uses electromagnetic induction to induce weak electric currents using a rapidly changing magnetic field; this can cause activity in specific or general parts of the brain with minimal discomfort, allowing the functioning and interconnections of brain. ...Read more

Can transcranial magnetic stimulation be used to treat bipolar disorder type 1?

Can transcranial magnetic stimulation be used to treat bipolar disorder type 1?

Depression: It has been shown to be effective in unipolar depression. However, studies are underway to establish it's efficacy in bipolar disorder: https://www.Musc.Edu/broadcast/show/33352 it would not be used to treat manic symptoms but may be helpful in depression. ...Read more

Is deep brain stimulation for depression helpful?

Is deep brain stimulation for depression helpful?

Very Likely: Dbs is the surgical placement of electrodes on 2 brain sites, which are then stimulated by electric currents. A small study suggests that dbs might be helpful for 60% of people who get treated with it - which is a good result when you are treating treatment refractory cases. Due to its invasiveness meds, transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms), and ECT should probably be considered beforehand. ...Read more

Can functional magnetic stimulation (fms) help treat paraplegia?

Can functional magnetic stimulation (fms) help treat paraplegia?

See below: Fms helps preserve muscle bulk in paralyzed muscles. It helps with circulation and joint health. It is not a cure for paraplegia but it is helpful to keep these muscles in good shape for the day (hopefully in the not too distant future) when we have a treatment to cure paralysis. The drawbacks are that is takes time, can tend to be expensive. But if the resources are available, i recommend it. ...Read more

Can we use tms (trans magnitic stimulation) for pain management?

Definitely: There have been very impressive results using tms in patients coming out of bariatric surgery. This was a double blinded-sham controlled study and it was repeated so it is very rigorous. People with active tms self-administered about 50% less narcotic from a pain pump than those with sham (fake) treatment. Without a doubt, tms works for certain types of pain and it is being explored for others. ...Read more

Is the method of transcranial magnetic stimulation any good in treating depression?

Is the method of transcranial magnetic stimulation any good in treating depression?

Looks promising : Refractory depression is often hard to treat. Tms offers a safe but expensive treatment which can be offered following failure to just one antidepressant. The treatments are usually 5 days a week and go on for 4-5 weeks in the parts of dallas I am familiar with.I wish insurance would cover this more often. ...Read more

Brain Connectivity: Think of the brain consisting of an inner core where our most basic emotions and impulses lie and an outer layer consisting of rational thought that can modulate emotion. These layers are connected.Rtms stimulates the outer layer which is most directly connected with the inner core associated w/ depressed mood.Tms can stimulate to enhance mood or inhibit to reduce depressed mood via the connection. ...Read more

Is electro stimulation therapy appropriate for bicep tendonitis?

Is electro stimulation therapy appropriate for bicep tendonitis?

It depends: Electric stimulation has been used for over 100 years. These days you have units that use either milliamps or microamps. There are now very sophisticated microcurrent machines in use by physicians, chiropractors, pts and athletic trainers. I think they are the most effective. Find a frequency specific microcurrent provider who has a machine w/ many settings including ones just for tendons. ...Read more
