Is it possible to get TMJ after wisdom teeth removal?

Is it possible to get TMJ after wisdom teeth removal?

Very common: This is due to the placement of a mouth prop for surgical procedure and the length of time needed to complete surgery with one’s mouth propped open. It should resolve with limited jaw opening, a soft diet, moist heat compresses and prolonged use of NSAIDs OTC.

Prior problem: It sounds like you had a problem prior to the extraction and having your mouth open made it worse. I would suggest seeing a dentist with extensive experience diagnosing and treating tmd in a non surgical way. It is rare for a patient to need surgical or extensive restorative dentistry to fix tmd.

Why is my TMJ worse after wisdom teeth removal?

Why is my TMJ worse after wisdom teeth removal?

Wide opening: When wisdom teeth are removed, the mandible (lower jaw) is stretched out wider than usual for the dentist/oral surgeon to extract the teeth. Depending upon the removal process (surgical or not,) the duration of the procedure may also affect the muscles/tmj complex. I would see the dr. Who removed the teeth asap.

Can wisdom teeth removal help TMJ if crowding is the main reason for the TMJ? Would braces also help?

Not crowding: Crowding not the cause of TMJ problems. Braces unlikely. Orthodontists almost ALWAYS want to treat TMJ with braces. Patients often end up with straight teeth and same TMJ problem. See a TMJ expert.

After my wisdom teeth removal I got tmj should I go back to the oral surgeon or go to a regular dentist?

After my wisdom teeth removal I got tmj should I go back to the oral surgeon or go to a regular dentist?

The Oral Surgeon: Some oral surgeons treat TMJ but in any event they need to be included in the team that treats you. You can also let your regular dentist know and he should be able to help with your symptoms. It is not uncommon to have some short term TMJ problems after difficult extractions and they are usually successfully treated.

Should I remove a wisdom teeth coz of tmj?

Should I remove a wisdom teeth coz of tmj?

TMJ/Wisdom teeth: Hard to say. Are the teeth erupted? How are they affecting your TMJ? They are different issues generally and do not overlap. Removing the teeth will not solve the TMJ issue. See a knowledgeable TMJ dentist, solve the TMJ issue then address the wisdom teeth if needed.

If the wisdom teeth don't have enough space on the dental arches to erupt which can be the effect on a TMJ joint (which is already degenerated)?

Hard to say: Typically wisdom teeth do not affect TMJ issues. I would suggest seeing a dentist to evaluate the degenerative process of your TMJ joint. Erupting wisdom teeth can put pressure on the existing teeth and cause a lot of pain in the area so you should have the wisdom teeth evaluated as well.

Never had any TMJ problems at all. 3 weeks after impacted wisdom teeth extraction, omfs believes I developed TMJ after surgery. Why? Is this forever?

Common: Sometimes the jaw joint, tmj, is strained during a wisdom tooth extraction and it can take sometime to heal. Treat it using the same principles you use for a sprained ankle, with rest, and following the surgeons recommendation. This means soft diet. Anti inflammatory medications. Time. The pain will decrease as it heals. Talk to surgeon about bite guard if symptoms persist.
