Is it true that carrots help your night vision?

Depends: The basis for this "old wive's tale" is that, accurately, carrots as well as other yellow/orange vegetables and gourds (squash, pumpkin) are fantastic sources of vitamin a, an essential vitamin required for photoreceptor (cone/rod) metabolism. While severe vitamin a deficiency may lead to serious, but generally reversible, vision problems, such as night blindness, most people in developed countries meet more than their daily vitamin a requirements from normal diets and there is no need to consume exorbitant amounts of carrots. In fact, vitamin a excess may be toxic to the liver and some clinical studies have demonstrated that excess vitamin a metabolites may actually be potentially toxic to photoreceptors. ...Read more

Poor night vision: do I have any options other than driver?

Corrective lenses: We all get more myopic (near-sighted) at night (stiles-crawford effect). Sometimes a stronger spectacle rx is needed for driving in the dark. There are retinal conditions that can cause poor night vision (search "nyctalopia"). A refraction performed with pupils dilated and ability to accommodate paralyzed can establish baseline spectacle rx, . In older people, a common cause is cataracts. ...Read more

I really need advice? Is there decreased night vision with age?

A little: Night perception requires the biochemical reconstitution of the light receptive pigments of the retina. As with all things, there is a little slowing of this with age. It is not usually very noticeable, so if this is a particular problem, see your ophthalmologist to see if there is another cause. ...Read more
