Which is better as regards glaucoma & prostrate enlargement in elderly - ipratropium or tiotropium?

Which is better as regards glaucoma & prostrate enlargement in elderly - ipratropium or tiotropium?

Good questions: Ipratropium is nebulizer treatment and it is short acting (does not last longer requiring more treatments). Tiotropium is a long acting inhaler and is once a day treatment. It should not be given if it is painful glaucoma or untreated one. These two drugs does not cause prostate enlargement however they can cause retention of urine if the prostate is enlarged. Side effect is very miminal for both. ...Read more

I'm using 2 rotacaps for asthma (salbutamol sulphate& ipratropium bromide, fluticasino propionate& formaterol fumarate). Is the long term use safe?

Yes and no: The last drug you mentioned formaterol is a long acting beta agonist (laba). In the us, labas alone are used in treating copd. When used in asthma and to reduce their potential serious side effects, they must be combined with a steroid like fluticasone. ...Read more

Does the xopenex (levalbuterol) inhaler contain steroids?

Does the xopenex (levalbuterol) inhaler contain steroids?

No.: Xopenx is a single medicine known as a short-acting-beta agonist (saba). There is no steroid. Its base medicine is albuterol. Most drugs have two forms-the active chemical and its mirror image (kind or like a right hand and left hand). Many drugs, only one of them works as the medicine. Xopenex (levalbuterol) is the "working form" of albuterol. Used to try and decrease side effects using active form of med. ...Read more

Can proventil and atrovent (ipratropium) used together?

Can proventil and atrovent (ipratropium) used together?

Absolutely: Proventil (albuterol) and atrovent (ipratropium bromide) are very commonly recommend to be used together for treatment of airway bronchospasm commonly seen in asthma or copd. I would caution that there are better, long-acting medications that provide better benefit if you are not well-controlled on proventil and atrovent alone. Otherwise they do indeed work very well together. ...Read more

Corticosteroid asthma medicine symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) or advair diskus; which is better?

Corticosteroid asthma medicine symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) or advair diskus; which is better?

Both are good: It's a matter of personal response to the medications. Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) is an aerosol and the coordination required to inhale it is a little harder than the diskus. Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) contains formoterol as the long-acting bronchodilator, and that works faster than the salmeterol in advair. Both come in different strengths as well. Try both and consider what each costs on your plan and the side effects you have. ...Read more

Which is better for COPD patients, albuterol inhaler or Combivent (albuterol and ipratropium) inhaler?

Which is better for COPD patients, albuterol inhaler or Combivent (albuterol and ipratropium) inhaler?

Unknown: Longer term studies show that both drugs are quick acting and relieve acute dyspnea/shortness of breath. It appears unlikely that either drug affects the natural history of asthma/copd. Longer acting drugs called maintenance inhalers are associated with significant decreases in exacerbation (flares) of these diseases and may affect lung function longer term. ...Read more

Using advair diskus (salmeterol and fluticasone) inhaler while breastfeedingis ok?

Up in the Air: There are not sufficient data one way or the other to say specifically that advair won't harm your baby.
