Tingling: Tingling and numbness that affects half of the body (which most people mean as including an upper limb, a lower limb, one side of the trunk, and sometimes one half of the face) can be caused by a problem in the brain or spinal cord. A pinched nerve can not cause those sorts of problems. Swelling of half the body is very uncommon. Such problems should be evaluated by a primary care doctor (family practice or internal medicine) who can help determine if a specialist is needed. ...Read more

I have numbness and tingling in my whole left side of body (under investigation) but why are these areas more painful to touch?

I have numbness and tingling in my whole left side of body (under investigation) but why are these areas more painful to touch?

Why indeed: Whatever is causing the numbness & tingling is also causing the painful sensation. The sense of touch is multimodality & of mind-mangling complexity. When you say the areas are "more painful, " do you mean allodynia, hyperpathia, dysesthesia or hyperalgesia? (The idea is now for you to look up those terms and try to determine which 1 (or more) applies to you.) ...Read more

I have a numbness/ tingling sensation under my low left ribs toward the middle of my body when I lay down on my side. No pain. 3-4 months.

Nerve: This could be a pinched nerve that is aggravated in certain positions. If you are not extremely bothered by it, there is no need to seek urgent care. If you see rash in the area, then I would see an M.D. as it could be shingles. The tingling with shingles though, is not usually intermittent or position dependent. ...Read more

Pretty persistent tingling and slight numbness mainly on left side of lips for over 2 weeks now. What could this be?

Pretty persistent tingling and slight numbness mainly on left side of lips for over 2 weeks now. What could this be?

Nothing else: At the least you're describing PARESTHESIAS of the lips but it certainly is a bit odd that it should be occurring just over the left 1/2 of your lips continuously. No facial droop on that side, drooling from the left corner of the mouth, difficulty closing the left eye? If yes, then, you may have a mild Bell's palsy. If not then, maybe getting some blood work would be indicated to check things. ...Read more

Can permanent MS damage still have symptoms with it that come and go? IE tingling, numbness off and on? Left side is damaged and those things come/go

Comments: Fluctuating symptoms can occur, and some of these may involve "ephaptic short circuiting" due to loss of myelin insulation due to permanent damage. This can easily be controlled and treated using some anti-epileptic drugs. Need to exclude superimposed co-morbidity, such as nerve compressions, by EMG study, and check B-12. Do you need a more potent medication?? ...Read more

I got shingles on both sides of my body from the waist down front and back. I am still dealing with numbness, tingling waist down a year later. Help?

Sorry some meds help: It sounds like you have a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia - the nerves where the shingles hid are still sensitive. It can continue to do so in some people up to 2 years from the incident. There are several meds in the market for it - check with your doc - they are designed to decrease firing of these nerves. They do eventually go back to normal. ...Read more
