Edema: Swelling comes from a variety of sources - obstructed return of blood or lymph from the legs, decreased pump function of the heart, liver disease or liver scarring, excess salt intake, loss of protein due to kidney disease and some medications. Leg swelling: various possibilities of course, but most young women with unilateral leg swelling will require an ultrasound to rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Risk factors include estrogens, smoking, immobility (long flights), recent surgeries etc... if you have any chest pain or shortness of breath, go to the ER.
