Depends . . .: Whether any given antibiotic works depends upon whether the infection is caused by a sensitive bacteria. For instance, common cold is caused by a virus and thus won't be affected by any antibiotic. Anyway, dalacin c is a brand not sold in the states. Whether the generic Clindamycin will work "correctly" depends upon what caused your infection. Ask your doc for culture & sensitivity. ...Read more

What does this mean?
Prescribed 210mg of Ferrous Fumarate. 1 3 times a day because my hemoglobin is 10, is this fine or to much?
Good dose of iron: This is a good dose for getting maximum benefit. It is essential that your body is low in Iron as shown on blood testing for Iron stores. Once your Hemoglobin(Hb) goes up, the dose of Iron pills can be reduced to 1 tab twice a day. But either dose is fine. Send us your CBC results as we want to know what your MCV result is besides having a low Hb. ...Read more

Hi Dr. I have been advised to take 5000 -10 000 mcg of biotin a day. My pack recommends 1 tablet a day which contains 300 mcg a day. Which is correct?
Biotin is a vitamin: necessary for the formation of fatty acids and glucose and in the metabolism of amino acids and carbohydrates. Because deficiency of biotin is rare, there is no RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) for it. Normal intakes for adults are 30 to 100 mcg. As you can see 5000-10,000 is excessive. Eat more cauliflower, bananas, carrots, liver, salmon. Save your money. Supplements not needed. Stay well:) ...Read more

Should I be concerned
? Gilbert's disease: It is a familial (autosomal dominant), common (2-5% of people), unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia (blood bilirubin measures 1-5mg/dl), not due to breakdown of blood. It is associated with reduced enzyme levels of udp glycuronyl transferase, that results in jaundice when patients fast or suffer an infection. It does not shorten life or raise insurance rates, but may predispose to tylenol (acetaminophen) toxicity. ...Read more
For 58+ F, Hb 10.8, RBC 3.66, PCV 34, MCV 94, MCHC 31, WBC 5.4, Pt 1.8, Iron 57, TIBC 255, TSI 22, RC 1.2, Ferritin 83 indicate which type of anemia ?
Mild anemia: Assuming you've had no recent bleeding episodes, these findings could be seen in mild/early anemia of chronic disease. Hgb and Hct are only boarder line low, and iron panel appears within the reference range. Even something as simple as a particularly heavy period could cause mild anemia of this type, though. If you have a chronic medical illness, it could cause this type of anemia. ...Read more
Talk to your doctor: You may want to talk with the prescribing physician about the side effects. I would let them know if breaking those tablets in half and taking them like that would make sense. Some people might do better with taking a half tablet twice a day or taking the dose about twelve hours later than usual. Be sure to keep your prescribing physician in the loop! stay safe! ...Read more
I'd elevated TSH;around 18, taking eltroxin 100 mcg daily, it's under control now but I look bloated, height 5.7", 145 lbs, age 29. What is wrong here?
Hypothyroidism: Eltroxin (levothyroxine) is used for hypothyroidism. If your TSH is 18, then you probably need an increase in dose of your eltroxin, although 100 mcg is probably enough to make you feel better, but a dose that normalizes your TSH will make you feel normal. Make sure you take it on an empty stomach and without hot liquids. See your doctor. ...Read more
My TSH is 9.75, T3 (liothyronine) is 2.10 and T4 is 0.73. I am taking 50 mg Thyroxine everyday. Is this enough or should i increase my dose?
Need more: TSH is still high. If you have been on same dosage for more than 6 weeks, you should talk to your primary. If dosage has been adjusted recently, you need to give it time for TSH to come down. Typically takes four to six weeks. You can also request a consult on health tap for a charge. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Reproducible?: Hi. Are this labs reproducible? The abnormalities are subtle, and repetition is needed to be convincing. If it's all reproducible, and you've got mild hypercalcemia with a low (almost suppressed) PTH, and a slightly elevated calcitriol, you could have a granulomatous process or a lymphoma. There are many good endocrinologists in Phoenix. See one and get an evaluation. Good luck! ...Read more
