Anti-thyroglobulin: Studies have shown that 99% of patients with hashimoto's thyroiditis have anti-microsomal antibodies, whereas only about 1/3rd had anti-thyroglobulin antibodies. In addition, 10-20% of persons without thyroid problems have anti-throglobulin antibodies (tg-a). These persons are likely at higher risk for future problems and should be watched more closely however, testing for tg-a is not necessary. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Hypothyroidism w/ elevated tpo antibodies, low t, adrenal insufficiency... Synthroid (thyroxine) & testosterone hasn't helped. Can I have an autoimmune disease?
You do have it: Elevated tpo antibodies confirms you have autoimmune thyroiditis. This is often triggered by environmental toxins ;/or infections. You will likely benefit from adding liothyronine to your regimen ; treating adrenal problems with cordyceps, rhodiola etc. I advise consulting with a holistic doc. Positive for thyroid paroxidase antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies. What does this mean? Had pap thyroid cancer in 2008 with thyroidectomy
Immunity to thyroid: The thyroid makes thyroglobulin (tg) and thyroid peroxidase (tpo). Even though you had your thyroid removed, your body's immune system sees tg and tpo as foreign and has made antibodies to them. This means that following your tg as a way to monitor your thyroid cancer might be unreliable. It could also mean you have thyroid tissue that is still present in your body. Ask your endocrinologist! ...Read more
What does it mean when thyroid peroxidase antibodies 50.2 IU/mL?
Thyroglobulin antibodies 18.0 IU/mL?
Not much by itself: Thyroid antibodies are most helpful if you have a low free T4 and a high TSH indicating hypothyroidism which is most often due to autoimmune thyroid inflammation. If those tests are normal you need no treatment but your high antibodies suggest you have an increased risk of developing hypothyroidism somewhere down the road, but many people with antibodies never develop a thyroid problem. ...Read more
