Yawning (Definition)

Yawning is opening the mouth semi-voluntarily while taking a long, deep breath of air. It is a type of reflex action controlled by the brain (a person cannot yawn on command). Yawning is normal, and usually due to drowsiness or tiredness. However, excessive yawning that happens much more often than normal may be caused by vagus nerve signals, due ...Read more

I had biopsies of thyroid nodules today my neck muscles are hurting more and feel tight what should I look for if something did go wrong my throat is sore my ears hurt real bad here and there when I move to get up

You: You should have no serious problems from fine needle aspiration biopsy but if you have continued pain or swelling call the doctor who performed the biopsies. You might be achy for about a day. You can feel pain in the ear because of how your nerves work even though it was your thyroid and your ear was not biopsied. This is called referred pain. Sometimes people will tense their neck muscles because of pain elsewhere in the neck. I hope you feel better today and the biopsies are all negative (no cancer). ...Read more

I have been experiencing a fullness feeling under my chin, almost tightness that does extend down the front of my throat. I have thyroid nodules but feel this might be too high in the throat for them. Going for an u/s scan tomorrow of thyroid to be sure

Thyroid Nodules: Thyroid nodules are very common. About 1 in 3 people develop them in their lifetime. The reason why we care, is that (in general) 5% of them turn out to be malignant. We also worry if they start to grow & put pressure on other structures in the neck, or become autonomous/overactive. An u/s will be helpful to evaluate. You should also discuss with your Dr. About checking TFTs & Thyroid Abs. ...Read more

Thyroid nodule is pushing on my throat, coughing, hard to swallow, feels awful. Don't know size yet, but what indications would it be removed?

Get evaluated: An indication to remove the thyroid due to a nodule is if it's already causing compressive symptoms. However, you need to get an ultrasound first to make sure it's a thyroid module causing your complaint and not something else. ...Read more

See endocrinologist: Maybe. There are a lot of possibilities. You need thyroid function blood tests. Perhaps an ultrasound with biopsy. This could be simple, or it could be complicated. Best to see an endocrinologist to sort things out. As a 19 yo woman, odd are in favor of autoimmune thyroid disease (hashimoto's thyroiditis or graves). ...Read more

1.3cm thyroid nodule with multiple punctate calcification, ear pain, lump feeling in throat, cancer chance?

Possible: I don't love giving scary news in this type of forum but anytime I see a nodule with microcalcification I get concerned about cancer. It should definitely be biopsied. Lump feeling is probably unrelated. ...Read more

12 year old had throbbing, pain, and discomfort on the left side of neck for 2 weeks. Doctor than found 2 thyroid nodules. What caused the pain??

Mass effect: Pain is usually a clue that something in your anatomy isn't working quite as it should. The nodules can cause pain due to the mass effect of the increased size of the nodules. It needs to be evaluated ...Read more

Can small thyroid nodules make you feel like someone's squeezing your neck?

Can small thyroid nodules make you feel like someone's squeezing your neck?

Generally not: Look for other causes. One uncommon cause is vocal cord dysfunction, which can feel just like an asthma attack, but is not relieved with inhalers. Esophageal spasm is another cause. Getting stuck on a preconceived diagnosis prevents the proper one from being made. See your doc, and describe your symptoms in detail to him, in order for the proper diagnosis to be made. ...Read more

Hello I recently found a lump on my neck I went for ultra sound and it confermed a thyroid nodule size 2cm by 3 CM non cystic and hypervascular?

Biopsy: Hi. Assuming your thyroid function is normal (not hyperthyroid), the thyroid nodule you describe needs fine needle aspiration biopsy for cytology (and hopefully genetic testing) to see if it's cancer. If it's not cancer, you can leave it in and just follow it, and thus avoid surgery for a non-cancerous tumor. I have to assume that whoever ordered the ultrasound has told you that you need FNAB. ...Read more

Soft nodule on back of neck, if touched, I experience vertigo. Lump is directly behind thyroid nodule on front of neck. Are they connected issues?

No: The thyroid is in the front of the neck. If this "soft nodule" is on the back of the neck, then it's not a thyroid. If pressing it cause vertigo, please see a physician to get it evaluated. Good luck. ...Read more

I woke a few days ago with pain and swelling on the lower front of neck. I can feel restriction wben swallowing. Could my thyroid nodules be reason?

It is unlikely: It is unlikely for a thyroid nodule to cause pain and swelling.
Pain/swelling in the midline front of the neck may represent thyroiditis, inflamed thyroid gland, or superinfected thyroglossal cyst.
However, if you feel any lumps that are getting larger, or have been in your neck for longer than 2 weeks, see your doctor right away, as this can represent infected or possibly cancerous lymph nodes! ...Read more

For over 2 yrs. I have had pain in the front of my neck as well as bi-lateral enlarged lymph nodes. Two 1.5 cm thyroid nodules just found. Thoughts?

Thyroid issues: Thyroid conditions such as thyroiditis and nodules can exist and cause symptoms for years. The thyroid nodules need to be biopsied and if the lymph nodes are enlarged enough, they may also need to be biopsied for a more specific diagnosis. Certainly, thyroid lab tests also need to be done if not done already. Good luck ...Read more

What can I do if my thyroid nodule in my neck biospy came back bengin is there anything to worry about?

Needle or Surgical?: Was the biopsy a needle biopsy or an excisional surgical biopsy? If surgical, then the nodule was removed and it is benign and you probably have little to worry about. If a needle biospy then you need to know if there was adequate tissue for diagnosis. If not, then you can't be sure there is nothing there. Sometimes a repeat biopsy is suggested or a followup sonogram of the nodule. ...Read more

Post-inflammatory node on my neck. Growing thyroid nodule that was previously ruled benign. What to do?

Consider re-biopsy: Benign nodules can grow just like malignant ones. Just because it is larger does not necessarily mean it is bad, but one should consider re-biopsy to verify that it is benign. Studies show that about 3-5% of nodules with benign pathology reports, are malignant on further testing. ...Read more

Small thyroid nodule on right side of neck only; hasn't noticeably grown in five years. Chance it will ever grow? What percent of nodules do grow?

Variable: If the nodule is "small" and hasn't grown in five years, it is probably benign and not a problem. Keep watching it, and check an ultrasound as you probably will form further nodules in the future. ...Read more

Can my neck lymph node infection have anything to do with my thyroid nodule?

Can my neck lymph node infection have anything to do with my thyroid nodule?

Thyroid nodule: Lymph nodes in the neck frequently swell and then regress during minor viral illnesses. So this may have nothing to do with a thyroid nodule. However, that thyroid nodule should be worked up. Ideally with an ultrasound-directed biopsy and you should be seen by an endocrinologist. A thyroid cancer can spread to lymph nodes, although the more likely explanation is a virus. ...Read more

I have a 3.5cm thyroid nodule with lower neck swelling, but normal TSH, T3, T4 blood levels. What could be causing this?

Goiter or Cancer?: A Thyroud mass can be benign in which case it is called a Goiter. There is about 10% risk that it can be a cancer. You should see your physician for further trests such as an ultrasound and or a Needle biopsy. Blood tests only show if your thyoid functions are normal or not. Since these are normal, you now need to go to the next step of further evaluation to find the cause of your Thyroid nodule. ...Read more

I had a neck CT scan an it showed that I now have numerous thyroid nodules and a cyst. Since I'm having compressive symtoms do I need to have surgery?

Probably: The tyroid gland sits right on top of the larynx, trachea. As it enlarges due to the formation of multiple nodues, if they are not large and no compressive symptoms occur, one treats conservatively, possibly using hormone replacement if needed. If too large some form of cytoreduction may be needed. ...Read more

Multiple thyroid nodules some are very large & others are attached to my vocal cords. Hard to swallow, swollen neck & painful, took raditn pill. 3 yrs ago. Help?

See endocrinologist: You did not mention if you had an overactive thyroid 3 years ago when given radioactive iodine. I assume your thyroid levels are normal now. If you still have large thyroid nodules, and symptoms related to it, you may need surgery to effectively deal with the problem. It is best to see an endocrinologist for a complete evaluation of your thyroid. ...Read more
