Thyroid and gland: You need to discuss with your doctor on the next step. A lot depends on the exact diagnosis, how long you have had the node, its location.

Biopsy (Definition)

Most of the time it is stained and looked at through a microscope to arrive at a diagnosis. Special processes are done for some tissues or problems. The purpose is to tell what the problem is (diagnosis). ...Read more

How badly does a thyroid biopsy hurt?

How badly does a thyroid biopsy hurt?

Not bad: It depends on your pain threshold but in general, it is not more than getting your lab draw, it's just intimidating because it's a needle in the neck. It's easy enough that some docs don't even need to give you numbing medication.

What is the definition or description of: thyroid biopsy?

Needle into nodule: Thyroid glands can develop nodules and an important way to determine whether the nodule is cancerous is a needle biopsy. This is done under ultrasound guidance and uses a very fine needle. The procedure in not as bad as it may sound and is done as an outpatient. It is best done by someone who does this all the time so that adequate material is obtained for a diagnosis.

After my thyroid biopsy a chocolate like mass was extracted what does it mean?

Thyroid Nodules: Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within your thyroid, a small gland located at the base of your neck, just above your breastbone. The great majority of thyroid nodules aren't serious and don't cause symptoms. Thyroid cancer accounts for a small percentage of thyroid lesions. The "chocolate" part refers to blood in the nodule. Your pathologist can tell if there is a tumor.

Why might a thyroid biopsy be inconclusive?

Can a thyroid biopsy's produce false results?

Thyroid biopsy: Hard to answer. No test is perfect. With an ultrasound-guided needle bx, the pathologist looks at the sample of cells that he gets. He may not get a good sample. In some kinds of thyroid cancer, it is hard to distinguish normal from abnormal cells. Sometimes decisions need to be made in spite of "test results", i.e. A judgement call. Talk to your endocrinologist.

Thyroid biopsy showed flus? How's it treated?

Thyroid biopsy showed flus? How's it treated?

Surgical biopsy: Hi. The follicular lesion of undetermined significance may be aided by the thyroid cancer genetic panel done on the biopsy cells. Was that done? If questions remain, you will need a surgical excisional biopsy to resolve whether cancer or benign. If cancer on frozen section, completion thyroidectomy; if benign, leave the other half in and close the wound.

Is it good to get a second opinion on your results of your thyroid biopsy?

Is it good to get a second opinion on your results of your thyroid biopsy?

It depends: Thyroid cytology requires expertise in some cases. If you are not sure of the expertise of the person reading the cytology you should ask for a second opinion. If you just don't like the conclusion, but they are expert, then you need to have an expert surgeon or endocrinologist who will take the time to explain why the treatment is appropriate and safe.
