Thumb Tendonitis Exercises
Got a spica splint, ice & nsaids for quervains tendonitis. Only feel pain when doing extensions with my thumb. When/how should I start rehab exercises?
Many Possibilities: Prolotherapy typically by itself will cause ligaments to tighten up, usually due to scarring or fibrosis of the ligaments. However now prolotherapy is used to introduce new blood supply to the area and then many times following it with the prp and/or stem cells in the area can repair the tissue/ligaments by the hopes that the stem cells regenerate the same normal tissue type. Ice, nSAID's+brace: Ice and immobilization are the first treatments, after you decrease your texting. Over the counter braces and anti-inflammatory medications will also prove very helpful. Occasionally, prescription medications, injections and/or occupational therapy may be needed. Surgery is rarely indicated. You may also consider using voice recognition to spare your thumbs! ...Read more
Different issues: Hyperextending the thumb really means that the thumb was straightened beyond its normal limit, causing a sprain of the plate on the palm-side of the joint. Tendonitis below the thumb is usually along the wrist and is called "dequervain's" tendonitis. It can be very painful and rarely goes away on its own. It can be treated. Earlier you get treated, the less likely it is that surgery will be needed. ...Read more

Pain in muscle of thumb, especially when gripping or if I press on it. No tingling or pain in other fingers. Is this tendonitis?
Possible: This sounds more like a contusion than tendonitis, but it would be possible to have a tendonitis of a flexor tendon. It would be reasonable to treat with ice/heat as well as NSAIDs (i.e. Advil, (ibuprofen) Aleve), and then see an orthopedist for further evaluation if symptoms persist or worsen. ...Read more

Weight training: A general rule after tendonitis or joint irritation has resolved is to go back at half load and half repetition. Mechanics become even more important. Speak with a trainer, or PT and your doctor to clarlfy things ...Read more

I iced my hand with tendonitis in 15 minute intervals and it turned blue. What does that mean? Should I not ice it at all?
normal response: The bluish discoloration is simply the response of your skin and the blood vessels in it to cold. You should not simply pack your hand in ice but actually massage it with an ice pack as this helps the local circulation but more importantly, reduces your risk of giving yourself a tissue injury such as frostbite. As long as the blue resolves when your hand warms up, everything is normal. ...Read more

I've been suffering from mild tendonitis on my left hand the past year and a half and I've been wondering how I could treat thanks :)?
Tendonitis: First this is very nonspecific. The hand and wrist has multiple joints, ligaments and tendons. All of which can be the source of your tendinitis. Not the mention that you can acquire masses such as ganglion cysts. Tendinitis rarely last greater than 6 weeks with rest and nsaids. If lasting longer you have to wonder if treatment adequate, or if diagnosis is correct. Recommend you have reevaluated. ...Read more
