Trigger thumb?: Sounds like trigger finger (in this case trigger thumb). Often happens from overuse. Best to see a hand surgeon, who can give you a steroid injection. If it keeps coming back, you should consider surgery (which is a simple procedure and very effective). ...Read more

See your doctor: This is something you need to be seen in person about. Gout is definitely a possibility, but there is a whole list of things this could be. I would elevate it, take some NSAIDs if you have no reason that you can't. Call your PCP to be seen today. you may need some X-rays and blood work done to see whats going on and also a referral to a rheumatologist or hand surgeon. ...Read more

Probably not: because trigger finger is caused by chronic, not acute, inflammation. But trigger finger does not usually present with swelling. Ask your doctor if it could be something else. ...Read more

Which thumb joint : there are three basic thumb joints. If this is at the bottom of the thumb, this is the carpometacarpal joint. It is commonly involved in osteoarthritis. And you may have had some irritation in the joint because of the severe pain. You can discuss this with the physician, there are some splints she can wear, you can have an injection, there are medicines that you can take. ...Read more

Think rheumatic dz: Definitely confusing! Nontraumatic IP joint swelling, especially in the thumb, brings to mind rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A common complication of RA is costochondritis which affects the rib joints (chest pain) & a variant called Caplan's Syndrome leads to lung nodules. RICE: Rest, immobilization, cold and exersice. Thumb joint pain, especially at the base, is usually arthritis. I start with a brace and oral steroids and if pain persists, injections and therapy follow. If i can't relieve the pain and x-rays show arthritis, i will procede with arthroplasty.
