Thumb Cramping Causes
My plam hurts like a aching pain/ cramping pain when my thumb touches my pinky. I have had no injury or recent injury. To neither what causes this?
A Long List!:
Many things can cause pain in the palm of the hand.
More common things would include a muscle sprain or tendinitis (inflammation).
These should improve with rest, icing, and elevation of the hand.
Other possibilities include a mass (growth), such as a ganglion cyst, or carpal tunnel syndrome. If it doesn't improve with rest in 7-10 days, see your family doctor. ...Read more
My wife is having thumb cramps. The pain is only in the nail section of the thumb and is frequent.?
Depends: If symptons sudden, with activity, it suggests silent carpel tunnel syndrome in your diabetes affecting the relative strength of your thumb to your other fingers. If the problem is developing slowly, with arthritic stiffness and weakness, you may have neuropathy. Overuse of the hands can trigger thumb problems because it is the most vulnerable digit. Don't worry, there are solutions (splints). ...Read more

Switch hands: Learn to use either hand when squeezing that frosting bladder. Lots of people end up with carpal tunnel syndrome from overuse. Take breaks (or even a vacation). Wear a cock up splint at night (to keep from folding the wrist) if that doesn't work get seen by a neurologist or a physiatrist who does good quality emg-ncs studies so you can get good advise about your situation and exclude other things. ...Read more

Check calcium level: My first thought would be that your calcium levels or thyroid hormone levels are not right. I's possible to have long lasting drop in calcium after a thyroidectomy. Please ask your pmd or surgeon if these have been checked recently, if they are off, these levels should be corrected. If these levels are normal it may just be coincidental to the thyroid surgery and would need en exam and work up. ...Read more
