Is permanent sharp throbbing pain in one side of the head, neck and back pain and scalp sensitive to touch and painful symptoms of occipital neuralgia?

Yes and No: It could be occipital neuralgia, however neck and back pain are not typical symptoms. I would suggest having your neck evaluated as well since many of those nerves can travel to both the neck, back and head to cause the symptoms you describe. ...Read more

I have neck pain and it seems to occur when in the cold. I can feel a knot at the bottom back of head next to the spine. Any thoughts?

I have neck pain and it seems to occur when in the cold. I can feel a knot at the bottom back of head next to the spine. Any thoughts?

Several: It sounds muscular & you may hold your neck in a tucked or lowered position when cold creating some muscular pain as you attempt to stay warm limiting your range of motion & the cold makes the muscles tighter or stiffer as you generally are not moving about as much. The large neck muscles attach/insert themselves at the base of your spine so you will typically feel a "knot" or tightened muscles. ...Read more

Neck pain on left side. I also get a pinching feeling in the same side of head and the back of head starts burning?

Neck pain on left side. I also get a pinching feeling in the same side of head and the back of head starts burning?

May be pinched nerve: If the pain that you feel is worse with bending your neck to the side and slightly backwards, it may be a pinched nerve (radiculopathy). The symptoms usually radiate to the arm or shoulder under those circumstances. If your symptoms are slightly better in that same position, then it could be myofascial pain or spasm. These indicators are not absolute but should be evaluated by your doctor. ...Read more

I have this sharp throbbing neck pain on the back of my neck, left side by my spine every time I move my head from side to side. Occured during stress?

See Doctor: First try nsaids like ibuprofen, aleve and you can even add some tylenol (acetaminophen) to help with pain. Ice the area for 20 min at a time and see if these help reduce the pain. If this persists longer than a few days, consider seeing your doctor for stronger medications to help. Typically most people get better within a few weeks of an injury. If not better consider further imaging studies to evaluate. ...Read more

Go to doc asap: The neck is one of those areas in which you could cause significant damage to the spinal cord if a fracture goes untreated. I am assuming all of the weight of your body fell in top of your neck which is not a good thing. You need plain films and additional flexion and extension views to rule out a listhesis/slippage. CT and/or MRI might need to be considered if there is suspicion for fracture. ...Read more

My sister 18 has a neck pain & headache in the back of head for 4 months. She usually took painkillers but for past week seems worsened. Why?

Good question: The history is scant so anything may cause her headaches. Painkillers are not the answer for headaches. She needs to see a physician to determine the source of her pain. It could be a migraine, a muscle tension, a reaction to chronic use of painkillers, a food sensitivity or even a brain tumor, although that is rare. ...Read more

Having pain in neck, back of head, and muffled ear only on left side. My teeth are shifting right now from losing retainer. Could this be the cause?

Yes, possible.: Your neck pain, head pain, and ear issue could be caused by the TMJ on that side. 42 yrs old female started having pain in neck, back of head, high blood press & now lower jaw and right arm are shaking. Reason? Pinched nerve may be?

Difficult diagnosis: If it involves numbness, I would recommend getting an EMG test to see if there is a nerve involved. It could be a focal seizure, and seeing a doctor could help tease that out. They might order an EEG. Another possibility is an atypical migraine. Multiple sclerosis is another possibility. The shoulder should be looked at as a source of the pain as well. ...Read more

Neck pain into middle/back of head, pain above eyes and back of head for over a week! Ear popping aswell! Any idea?

Neck pain: Likely arthritis in the neck (cervical spondylosis). Neck muscles that insert on the back of the skull become tense in an attempt to maintain good posture which leads to headaches. These headaches originate in the back of the head and migrate forward. Often the headaches worsen through the day. The popping noise are the facet joints of the cervical spine rubbing together and transmit to the ear. ...Read more

Daily twitching eyelid on left side with headache over eye that comes and goes. Sometimes neck pain or pain on back of head also. Eye is dry also.

No simple answer: The most common cause of achy pain around the eye that I see, comes from irritation of some nerves in the upper neck near the base of the skull. When they are irritated, there may be a tender spot to pressure over them in the neck but the body may be most aware of the pain felt around and behind the eye - called referred pain. For this particular cause, tratment must be delivered to the neck. ...Read more
