My throat culture & sensitivity c/s report says "organism: moderate growth streptococcus viridans group" is this normal, i've white coating on tongue?

Possible fungal...: Overgrowth. If you have cultures, you are probably already on an antibiotic for something. S. Viridens is a common oral bacteria that we all have on some level. Yours may be higher than normal but the white on your tongue could be candidiasis from a lack of "regular" bacteria that keep it down. Try 1/2 hydrogen peroxide/ 1/2 or mouthwash, brush your tongue, if no luck see a dr. May need nystatin. ...Read more

Started with sore throat, headache, muscle aches and sensitivity to touch. Took DayQuil but does not relieve sore throat. Do I have strep or the flu?

Need exam/swab: If you go to the doc, s/he can obtain a good ENT exam, including a tonsilar swab for a rapid Strep test. An acute EBV tonsillitis looks very similar with fever, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, lymphadenopathy & white plaques on the tonsils. EBV can even cause right upper belly pain (acute viral hepatitis). Antibiotics will help a strep but not viral infection. Consider sugarless lozenges. ...Read more

Sick with a cold a week ago, had a soar throat along with very tender lymph nodes in neck. Not ill anymore but neck lymph nodes still very tender, something To be concerned? How long does the tenderness go down after illness? Should I see a doctor?

Lymph nodes: After such an infection I would give the reactive lymph glands a couple of weeks to lose their tenderness. Even then small, shotty lymph nodes may persist months or even years but they should not be tender. Worrisome signs would be growth of new glands, increasing size of one or more glands or appearance of new palpable lymph glands in other parts of the body. See your physician as needed. ...Read more

Lymph nodes "taste" lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well. ...Read more

30y/o female. History of GERD many yrs and increasing esophageal tenderness. Suddenly have dysphagia lump in throat feeling for over a week. Cancer?

Probably not cancer: Cancer is possible but is very unlikely at your young age of 30. It is more likely that you have developed esophageal irritation and possible a stricture or narrowing of the distal esophagus. You need to see a gastroenterologist or surgeon for an endoscopy to evaluate the dysphagia. You should be on an acid blocker if you are not on one already. Good luck! ...Read more
