Throat Infection Bro Zedex Cough Syrup
Avoid Cold medicines: Cough in young children is extremely frustrating for parents. Unfortunately cough medications used in adults don't work in children. Decongestants in combination with cough medications can actually be harmful. Using guafenesin may be helpful to help secretions stay loose. Increasing fluid intake and humidity in the air can definitely help. Honey (for kids over 12 months) may be a natural remedy. ...Read more

Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Antibiotics: Antibiotics as you know do not treat viral infections. Most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses and will clear by themselves in a few days. Encourage lots of fluids, try sitting with her in a hot steamy bathroom to loosen phlegm and mucus, and call your pediatrician if she seems ill or sicker. ...Read more

Child strep and bad mucous cough. Antibiotics for 3 days still has fever. Doc prescribed claritin nasal spray and inhaler for rhonchi, why claritin?
Good question: I am not aware of a nasal spray containing Claritin. Even then it would not have done that much for nasal congestion or the cough That the fever is still present after 3 days of antibiotic points more to a viral infection which often causes coughing and wheezing in children especially before age 3. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Mild pneumonia (seen on film). Dr. rx'd Cedinifir 2 nites ago. Just starting dry cough. No fever. Should I get expectorant? Delsym (dextromethorphan) = diarrhea.
Pulmonary infiltrate: Whether or not you have a pneumonia likely to respond to a cephalosporin antibiotic is very questionable and would need more info to say for sure, but an infiltrate with a dry cough sounds more like an atypical pneumonia and this is not likely to respond to the antibiotic you have been given. If you are significantly symptomatic (fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, etc.) see an ID doctor. ...Read more

My daughter's pediatrician prescribed her Bromfed (brompheniramine) dm cough syrup as needed for cough and she is only 2 yrs old. Is this cough syrup bad for her?
Not recommended: The fda, as well as the aap do not recommend cough/cold products for young children, as they have not been shown to be effective, and may have side effects. I'd suggest vaporizer, fluids, suction nose with saline, and if over 1 yr, a tsp of honey. Don't use honey if less than 1yr, as there is a risk of botulism. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Most likely safe...: It is always hard to gauge how safe a medication is during pregnancy. Both of the drugs you mentioned are class c which is defined as drugs that have not been shown to be harmful to fetuses, but data is limiting; use if benefits outweigh potential risks. I guess i would ask how bad was your stomach pain from the cough. If it wasn't too bad, i wouldn't take anything (the safest alternative). ...Read more
