Blood-other causes: Black stool (melena) can be caused from old blood in the stomach/intestines, . Licorice (black) can also cause this. Call your physician for upper endoscopy results and photos, get routine blood testing. Defintely do not ignore!

Melena (Definition)

Melina is blood in the stool that is black, tarry, sticky, and smelly. The blood in melena comes from high up in the gastrointestinal tract, and gets partially digested which is why it changes to melena. Bright red blood comes from lower ...Read more

Pediatrician: Iron fortified formula may have a darker appearance to the stool. If it is black or very dark, bleeding from the GI tract or upper airway is a possibility. It is important to notify your pediatrician.

Not likely: The color of the stools can certainly be affected by the type of food that we eat, but usually not black unless you eat raw red meat or other dish containing animal blood. If you are really having jet black and tarry stools, then it may suggest bleeding inside the stomach or small bowels. You need to see your doctor right away for urgent evaluation.

How long to wait for medical advice if you have black stools?

How long to wait for medical advice if you have black stools?

Sorry, do you mean: Medical advice from healthtap? I just now read your question. Black stools that are sticky and smell bad can represent gastrointestinal bleeding. But some meds (i.e., pepto bismal or iron) and some food can cause black or dark stool as well. Get it medically checked.

How long can I wait with black stools to see if it goes away without seeing a doctor?

How long can I wait with black stools to see if it goes away without seeing a doctor?

GI Bleeding?: Black stools can be caused by harmless things such as certain foods (e.g., blueberries, black licorice) or meds such as bismuth (pepto-bismol) or iron supplements. But it may be a sign of bleeding somewhere in your digestive tract, which can be serious (and doesn't always cause pain). If you haven't eaten these foods/meds & you're having black stools, or if you have vomiting or pain, see your dr.

How long do black stool last after you had several teeth pulled?

How long do black stool last after you had several teeth pulled?

How much bleeding?: Ingesting blood can cause the stools to be black. GI bleeding can do this also. This color is a result of digested blood. Recurring black stools, especially those that smell foul, should be investigated by a physician.

How long before black stools clear?

Depends on the cause: If black stools are due to bleeding from the stomach it may take few days with the treatment of underluing cause like gastric erosions, ulcers etc. If they are not due to bleeding and from eating certain foods, meds and taking iron than it will clear if you stop the iron or the foods which are causing it.

Black stool that is brown on inside. Could this be from too much Grape juice and oreos? How long should it take for stools to go back to normal color?

Watch: Stool can be colored based on foods we eat and food coloring, however black stool can be concerning in that it can be a sign of bleeding in the intestinal tract. If continues or associated with abdominal pain, lightheadedness, shortness of breath or any other unusual symptoms then see a doctor or ER as soon as possible

After EGD and Duodenal biopsy I see watery black stools. How long will this last or should I report it right away?

After EGD and Duodenal biopsy I see watery black stools. How long will this last or should I report it right away?

ASAP-you're bleeding: Melena, by definition, is passage of dark stools stained with denatured blood. As we established in prior healthtap answers, all dark stool is not melena, but the temporal relationship of biopsies & melena in your case is highly suspicious for unabated procedure-related hemorrhage. Call your endoscopist RIGHT NOW please as well as 911--& get to the Emergency Room for urgent care.

I have stomach pain and black stool not tarry just started today hurts occasionally how long should I wait before going to the doctors?

I have stomach pain and black stool not tarry just started today hurts occasionally how long should I wait before going to the doctors?

If melena, go NOW...: Melena, by definition, is passage of dark stools stained with denatured blood. As we established in prior healthtap answers, all dark stool is not melena. Your doctor, or even an over-the-counter test that you can purchase, can check to see if your dark stool contains blood. Needed is for you to provide a sample of the dark stool. False positive results can occur based on diet & stool additives.

Speaking of black stools, do you mean very dark brown or truly black?

Speaking of black stools, do you mean very dark brown or truly black?

Black: Black stools (melena) are potentially worrisome as this can be a sign of intestinal bleeding. A few other things can cause black stools (like iron supplements) but regardless, you should have it checked by your doctor.

Yes: Black stool can be blood in there from the stomach or duodenum. A quick visit to the doctor can get the result with a quick test for blood. It is something that should be checked by your physician.

What do you advise if I had dark brown with mostly black stool this morning. Should I worry?

If it was: Black, tarry and foul-smelling it could be related to GI bleeding. That would warrant medical eval. Take care.

I passed black stool 2 times &my OCCULT bood came +ve. My phyiscan prescribed me PANTOCID & now for last 2days I am passing normal stool. Is that ok?

Need further testing: It sounds like you could have an ulcer or pre-ulcer changes in the stomach if the black stools resolved with Pantocid, I would recommend evaluation with an upper endoscopy to assess the problem more fully.
