30. Feel knee pop or snap around/from knee sometimes when turning foot out. MRI Dx w/chondromalacia. Told patellar maltrack. Recovery time? Any advice
Variable: The recovery time can vary from weeks to years. Chondromalacia implies long-term, often irreversible damage to the cartilage that covers the bone. However, symptoms can improve or even disappear. If your patella is not tracking properly, then I recommend a physical therapy program, patellar stabilizing brace and rest from activities that worsen symptoms. Also, update/improve athletic footwear. ...Read more

Find the cause 1st: A clicking sensation in the joint is due to something getting caught between the joint surfaces. The stair climbing puts extra pressure on the joint and exacerbates the clicking. It's usually due to a loose body of calcium like a bone spur from arthritis broken off in the joint or a torn piece of cartiladge like a torn meniscus getting caught in there. Start with an x-ray, then maybe an mri. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Meniscus problem: You may have a damaged meniscus (a flat crescent-shaped piece of cartilage - or "gristle" - in the knee joint). At your age, trauma from sport or accident are the more likely causes. Do you have knee swelling? Is the pain worse going up or down stairs, aggravated or relieved by activity? Diagnosis dependent: Clicking is a nonspecific finding with several different knee problems. The combination of a thorough history, exmination, and x-rays +/- an MRI (if indicated) will led to a specific diagnosis over 90% of the time. Not all clicks lead to surgery, but you owe it to yourself to help figure out the diagnosis by obtaining a comprehensive evaluation. If therapy is recommended you should do the therapy. ...Read more
