Sleep signal: Melatonin is the hormone that tells the rest of the brain it's time to wind things up. In animals alterations in melatonin secretion signal hibernation, weight gain, fur changes, etc. ...Read more

However, there are studies suggesting benefit but whether it applies to you is another question. . ...Read more

Can you take both melatonin and zzzquil together to sleep?

Can you take both melatonin and zzzquil together to sleep?

What's zzzquil?: Are you talking about Nyquil (over the counter)? The reaction between them is to increase sleepiness. I recommend against that combo. Melatonin's more SPECIFIC for sleep induction than Nyqil which puts you out due to its side effects. Ask your doctor for a good therapeutic dose of the melatonin first. BTW. How about figuring out why the insomnia 1st? Forget ZZTop. Or whatever. ...Read more

Jet lag! Can't sleep! Should I double up on the melatonin?

Increase Melatonin: Jet lag is a mismatch between your internal biologic clock and the external time of your surroundings. Your internal clock is set by both sunlight and melatonin. Get out into sunlight morning and evening, eat at times for new time zone, and take melatoinin before bedtime. Avoid computer & tv screens 4 hours before bed as they interfere with melatoinin production. Prescription sleep aides may help. ...Read more

Is it ok to give melatonin to a 2 year old to help him sleep?

Occasionally: But not recommended. Melatonin is a natural hormone and long term in young people can affect their growth hormone. I would be more interested in exploring his diet, bedtime routines, parental response to his sleep issues, medications, tonsils and adenoids, etc to see if we can determine a cause for his sleep issues and address that. ...Read more

What sleep medicine works the best? Melatonin, hops, passionflower

What sleep medicine works the best? Melatonin, hops, passionflower

Any: Any patient who has insomnia must pay attention to their sleep hygiene. You must avoid alcohol and sedatives after 6 pm, leave bed for sex and sleep only and no tv in bed. If you can't fall asleep in bed don't stay in bed just find something else to do and come back to bed when u are a little sleepy. This will train your brain that bed is not for worrying/watching tv etc and will improve sleep. If all this does not work then you can consider other alternatives. Since melatonin is a natural supplement thus should be the first step. Sleep aids have high risk of dependance and should be tried on as needed basis only. ...Read more

I work overnight. Will melatonin work to help me sleep during the day?

I work overnight. Will melatonin work to help me sleep during the day?

Melatonin: Yes it will but it works best when taken 30-60 minutes before bed and also when you stay in a darkened environment prior to sleep. So keep the room you sleep in dark and it will have a better effect. Other short acting sedatives such as zaleplon may also be of help, particularly for shift work. ...Read more

Why is 300mg of melatonin not making me tired enough to sleep properly?

Why is 300mg of melatonin not making me tired enough to sleep properly?

It doesn't do that: First, melatonin is not FDA controlled. Do hamburgers vary? Melatonin is no more regulated than foods and there's zero quality control on whether you are really getting 300 mg.
Then assuming its ok, it is the hormone that tells you it is dark. THis might be a trigger to sleep, but it is NOT a sedative. Unless you are tired, due for sleep, etc. It won't do much. ...Read more

I couldn't sleep last night and so I took 5mg melatonin and zzzquil. Is that ok to do?

Depends: Melatonin may or may not work for many people and thus you should try the long-acting type for a few days before adding anything or stopping its use when there has been no benefit. Zzzquil, Dramamine, and Xanax (alprazolam) all cause some drowsiness and thus it is unwise to take them together. However if you were to use on zzzquil and melatonin alone, this'd be ok. ...Read more

I take melatonin, and I can get to sleep but I wake up at 4am and I can't get back to sleep?

More than melatonin: It maybe more than just the melatonin. Sleep hygiene is key. That involves no bright lights, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, large meals, and use of electronics (tv, computer, smart phone, etc) prior to bed, as well as same sleep and wake up time all week long. Other underlying disorders should be looked at as well. It is best to consult a sleep medicine specialist who can help you sleep better. ...Read more

Why does my melatonin help me sleep some nights and not others? I'm taking 5 mg time released. I take nothing else.

Possibilities: A few possibilities. First, there may not be same amount of melatonin in each time-released capsule. True but herbals are not regulared in the us. Also melatonin is inactivated by light so when you are on computer/television at night, may not work as much as if you were, say, reading. Also timing is important, taken after body temperature core min, might not help at all! ...Read more
