Is it true that the bigger the visual field defect, the worse the brain is actually damaged?

Is it true that the bigger the visual field defect, the worse the brain is actually damaged?

Depends: Visual field defects can come from brain damage but most commonly from damage to the retina and optic nerve. If the visual nerves in the brain are disturbed by stroke, or vascular changes, tumors or some congenital anomalies, there can be field defects. But the defect depends upon the size of the optic nerves impacted. So a large lesion might have minimal visual disturbance in some cases. ...Read more

Is it true that the bigger the visual field defect, the worser the brain has been damaged?

Is it true that the bigger the visual field defect, the worser the brain has been damaged?

Depends: If the area of the brain damaged is the occipital lobe or the optic radiations, then visual field defects can occur. Generally damage at its maximum occurs immediately and over time there can be a lessening if the areas recover. Of course, the larger the initial damage, the more changes will be detected. Your neurologist can help sort this out. ...Read more

Heard that perfumes contain toxic chemicals capable of remaining in the brain for decades once crossed the blood brain barrier, is this true?

Heard that perfumes contain toxic chemicals capable of remaining in the brain for decades once crossed the blood brain barrier, is this true?

I don't think so: Our world's full of causes, and an understandable fear of "chemicals" has prompted some people to demand a "perfume-free workplace." i don't want to get into any arguments here, but i think most healthtap members will tell you these fears are not evidence-based. The most inflammatory claim about neurotoxicity is a non-peer-reviewed poster. I'll add that i very much dislike artificial fragrances. ...Read more

How can the baby die that is in the womb of the brain dead woman being removed from life support?

How can the baby die that is in the womb of the brain dead woman being removed from life support?

I'm not sure why: no one has answered your question, except that it is a sad, painful situation to experience. A fetus in the womb is totally dependent on it's mother for survival. If a mother is put on life support, the infant can sometimes survive but if the mother is taken off life support the infant cannot survive unless it is at or close to full term. It is a sad, difficult situation 4 both families & doctors ...Read more

Does the latest large study research support that tinnitus originates from the inner ear or the brain or it is not yet known?

Brain: The present concept of tinnitus is that it is caused by a synchronous discharge of electrical activity from the central auditory nervous system, eg. the dorsal cochlear nucleus. Keep in mind that not only does hearing loss cause the perception of sound in the ear. but there are other causes of tinnitus, including, TMD, cervical disease, even dental abscess. When does the emotional part of the brain stop growing?

When does the emotional part of the brain stop growing?

No expert agreement: Most now feel complex emotions do not reside in only one spot in the brain, they are formed like jigsaw pieces from many parts of the brain. Tests like functional MRI and PET scans are sorting this out but more questions are always arising. The best approach is to ask when does the whole brain reach maturity. This may be near 30 years old. See: http://mentalhealthdaily.com/2015/02/18/at-what-age- ...Read more
