The Best Supplements To Take While Weaning From Effexor
A dietary supplement, also known as food supplement or nutritional supplement, is a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids, that may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantities in a person's diet. Some countries define dietary supplements as foods, while ...Read more
Not hard: Take the morning zoloft (sertraline) on day 1 as usual. Then wait until evening to take zoloft (sertraline) on day 2. The benefit of an ssri such as zoloft (sertraline) will not "wear off" by the minor delay during the switch, nor would a discontinuation syndrome happen that fast. Taking the first evening dose on the same day as the last morning dose would be more apt to cause a small overdose situation and temporary side-effects. ...Read more
Get tablets: If you are having trouble weaning off 25 mg zoloft, (sertraline) you may be a slow metabolizer. Check with your doctor. Otherwise, skip a capsule every 5 days for 2 wks, then every 4 days for 2 wks, then every 3 days, then every other day for 2 wks etc then one cap every 3days for 2 wks, every 4 days for 2 wks, then stop. ...Read more
None: Phentermine (duromine) is not safe with ssri's, tricyclics, or maoi's. There are cardiovascular warnings with it by itself, also. There are non-drug treatments for depression (such as psychotherapy) that may help. You might also consider whether you really need to be on an appetite suppressant like duromine, or whether other methods of weight control would be healthier and longer-lasting. ...Read more

Ask your MD first.: Start Paxil (paroxetine) 20 mg and stop Zoloft. Wait 2 weeks. If you need higher dose go up to 30. There are differences in 5HT receptor activity. Also differ with histamine, Dopamine and Noradrenergic activity. Take the Paxil (paroxetine) in the morning as it tends to be "activating" Watch for allergy (as you would with any new med) also watch for serotonergic syndrome (muscle stiffness, elevated BP, HR, temp, confusion) ...Read more
Please ask doctor: The best and most proper response from anyone to a question on changing medications which are prescribed is that you need to check with the provider who prescribed them. They know your particular situation and if there'd be a problem without your switching things around. Nobody here has that knowledge. When switching from Lexapro (escitalopram) to Zoloft is it common for their to be a down cycle, i.E depression, an how long should the transition take.?
Not necessarily: As long as you take a dose of zoloft which is equivalent to the Lexapro (escitalopram) dose, the switch should be okay. Maybe you can discuss this with your prescribing physician as you shouldn't make adjustments on your own. Finally, and unlike lexapro, (escitalopram) zoloft may be better absorbed (you get more), when taken with food-perhaps up to 50% better absorbed with food. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I take 20 mg of celexa (citalopram) and would like to take Rhodiola. With hopes to wean off celexa (citalopram). Is it ok to take together for a bit?
I'm switching from 5mg of Lexapro (escitalopram) to 20mg of prozac. Dr told me to take both the Lexapro (escitalopram) and Prozac together for a week, then stop the lexapro (escitalopram). Is it safe to take both together for a week?
It should be O.K.: You should be O.K. With taking both meds together for one week, unless you are sensitive to higher doses of meds. Usually, people who are slow metabolizers of drugs build up high drug levels in their body ; could experience side effects like rapid pulse, labile blood pressure, sweating, tremors ; diarrhea. If you have ocd, then higher doses of these ssri meds may be indicated. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I take 100mg sertraline daily. Is it okay to take melatonin supplements to aid sleep whilst flying to other side of world?
Absolutely OK: Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland. Melatonin levels decline predictably with age. Melatonin supplementation has a wide range of beneficial effects--not just as a sleep aid. It is a "regulator of regulators," and helps maintain circadian rhythms of other hormones, as well. Doses as high as 500 mg/day have been taken for prolonged periods without adverse effects. ...Read more
I would like to ask how long it takes for the brain to return to normal after using neuroleptics. Currently withdrawing and which supplements to take?
Talk to doctor: i'm not sure what you mean in your question about the brain "returning to normal." No one is prescribed neuroleptics who has a "normal" brain to begin with. Neuroleptics are prescribed for people diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and so on. When the medicine is stopped, the brain returns to its diseased state within days. I would not recommend any supplements. ...Read more

I am on 20 mg of Lexapro (escitalopram) and my doctor wants to add 25 mg of Zoloft trying to bring up serotonin levels is this an appropriate action to take?
What is the best way way to wean off zoloft (sertraline) 25 mg od. I've been taking it for a year?
Taper Zoloft (sertraline): Generally, a taper over months with 2-6 weeks between steps is recommended. Yours is a very low dose (25mg). At that dose, it should be possible to just stop it. Have a look at the article in the Harvard Medical Letter on how to discontinue antidepressant meds: http://bit.ly/1F5ctVz. Of course, you should discuss your plans with the prescribing physician before proceeding. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
When switching from Effexor (venlafaxine) to cellexa ,will the Effexor (venlafaxine) in your system have any benefit until the cellexa starts to work?
Yes: How long depends on if it is XR or regular effector. The Regular Has Half Life Of About 16 Hrs Which Means It Will Stay In Your System For About 5 Days And Probably Still Have Some Effect For Even Longer. XR will last 2-3 weeks. Not sure why you are switching but in case your doc didn't explain effexor (venlafaxine) is SNRI (increases norepinephrine and serotonin) Celexa is SSRI (serotonin only) ...Read more
Can I wean off of Effexor (venlafaxine) XR 35mg, and take Zoloft 25mg at the same time, so there is no lapse in treatment? And how long until Zoloft starts working?
Yes, if doc agrees: always discuss your plan of care with ur doc. it's most common 4 docs 2 recommend that patients reduce the dose of one med while they transition on to a new one, for the reason u mentioned -- no lapse. docs call this a "cross taper". Unclear how long it will take for zoloft (sertraline) to work. some pts feel btr in just a few days, while others may need up to 8 wks on the right dose. ring ur doc to discuss :) ...Read more

Benzos are Dangerous: No. Why would you have two drugs of the same class? Does your prescribing physician know you are on all of this medication? The goal is to find a way to prevent anxiety. Benzos do not cure, treat or prevent anxiety. They calm you down; they are sedating? And they are extremely addictive. ...Read more

With medical help: Hopefully the doctor who prescribed it will assist in terminating it. It needs to be either a very slow tapering off or being switched to a different ssri with a longer half-life and have that drug tapered. Those take a shorter time to taper. The "discontinuation" syndrome can be very troubling and serious. You want to avoid it and you can, but not alone. Best wishes for success. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Weaning off effexor (venlafaxine) for the past year, now at point of 37.5mg everyother day, but feeling very emotional. Is this normal?
Effexor (venlafaxine) tapering: You may be having symptoms of underlying depression/ anxiety from lower Effexor (venlafaxine) dose or you're having withdrawal symptoms. If going back up a little on the dose helps, you may need to either stay on that dose for maintenance or go more slowly with tapering Effexor (venlafaxine). Best to review with prescribing doctor and ask what to do. I hope this helps. ...Read more

I am under a doctor's care and currently weaning off of 15 years of using Effexor (venlafaxine) 150 mg daily. Why is it such an ordeal with this drug? Horrible .
Yes.: Getting off antidepressant is not a pleasant experience and may take a lot longer than you think. The secret is to gradually wean by small increments and if symptoms occur, go back to the last dose that you felt good at then wait a few days and decrease by12.5 mg at a time for a week then decrease again in a week . Increase your exercise level and continue following your doctor's advise. ...Read more
As i gradually weaned off Effexor (venlafaxine) XR and took Prozac to decreased Effexor (venlafaxine) xr, my sleep hasnt been the same and i get aggravated, what is this?
More data needed: Effexor (venlafaxine) xr works on more neurotransmitters than prozac. Also depending upon the dose of the Effexor (venlafaxine) xr perhaps it was tapered too fast and or the dose of Prozac was not high enough. In either event you need to discuss it with you doc. Often their are other temporary medications that can be taken prn to get you through the switch over phase. Also the time of day that you take the meds is important. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Used Effexor (venlafaxine) 75mg, for 2 years.Weaned off at 33.5mg.Stoped taking for 4 months because i thought i was better.Having anxiety again, tried but made wors?
Return of symptoms: Return of symptoms is not uncommon with anxiety. Are you still working with a therapist (you list "behavior therapy" your clinical findings)? If you stopped that therapy also, you could resume it and hopefully get your symptoms into remission again. Are you still on klonopin (clonazepam)? Tolerance can develop with it, and this may be happening with you also. Talk with your doctor about medication options. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I was taking Effexor (venlafaxine) for approximately 1 year. With the help of my doctor i managed to wean off. How long will i experience withdrawl symptoms?
About 3-4 weeks: Although Effexor (venlafaxine) has a relatively short half-life and is out of your system already, your body has gotten used to its presence and certain receptor sites changed as a result. I find that it takes about 3-4 weeks for the discontinuation symptoms to subside, and i often recommend that my patients take an occasional small dose of the medication if the discontinuation symptoms become unbearable. ...Read more
I have been on Effexor (venlafaxine) XR 75mg for 10 yrs but want to wean off of it. How should I do this and what withdraw symptoms could i have? What are brain zaps?
Effexor (venlafaxine) withdrawal: If you've been on Effexor (venlafaxine) for that long, you need to work with your physician on a tapering schedule. First make sure that the symptoms you were having before effexor, (venlafaxine) are stable. Common discontinuation symptoms include dizziness, electric shock-like sensations, sweating, nausea, insomnia, tremor, confusion, nightmares, and vertigo. "brain zaps" are electric shock-like sensations in the head. ...Read more

Serotonin : Serotonin discontinuation symptoms, associated with abrupt discontinuation of Effexor (venlafaxine) , could be related to it`s short half life. In most cases, this may be minimized by slowly tapering the dosage. Another strategy would be using a low dosage of a long acting ssri like fluoxetine.. The physical symptoms include problems with balance, gastrointestinal and flu-like symptoms, and sensory and sleep disturbances. Psychological symptoms include anxiety and/or agitation, crying spells, irritability and aggressiveness. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
