Fiber: Laxative r a stimulant & u will b come dependent on them where as fiber is a natural way 2 ur colon 2 absorb more h2o & that softens ur stool. Also remain well hydrated. Urinating seldom during the day & dark urine means u need more h2o. More often & almost clear color means good hydration. Stay away from stimulants.

Moderation is good: You're on the right track. Eating a balanced diet that includes fiber, drinking lots of water and exercise is the first step. If your exercise is too vigorous, though, you can get dehydrated, which can worsen the constipation. Certain meds can cause it, also. If those measures don't work well enough, prunes or apple juice or pectin products like jelly beans or even nuts can help. Try meds last

Insoluble fiber: Produces more stool. Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol. So both are beneficial. Time of day is irrelevant but best to spread out thru the waking hours. More important to prevent bloating, gas and constipation is adequate fluids: 80-100 oz of caffeine free/alcohol free fluids is recommended.

Metamucil: I would recommend Metamucil daily. It gives you enough fiber a day to help with constipation. I also recommend prune juice for breakfast as this can very much help with constipation naturally.

Constipated for 2 wks. I took MiraLax & Colace for 3 days, but neither helped. I've been drinking prune juice & eating high fiber foods. I've gone a little, but I'm still constipated. My K level is 3.2. What can I do at this point? (Best options?)

Enema/water: At this point I suggest that you try a Fleet's enema which you can buy at the pharmacy. Continue the miralax (polyethylene glycol) nightly. The colace is not likely to help much but adding a fiber supplement, walking daily for at least 30 minutes and drinking at least 3 liters of water daily could also help. If this does not work then you may need to see a doctor for a medical intervention.

Rebound: If u stop it then u get a rebound effect, meaning the fiber is now not pulling h2o from ur body in the colon, & the colon is now reabsorbing h2o.U must remain well hydrated. Ur urine is a good judge, dark is an indicator u need h2o. It should b almost clear, this indicates u r hydrated. Also if u urinate vey little during the day is a sign 4 more h2o, more often will happen when well hydrated.

Fruits and vegetable: Slads, whole grains are best and don't bother with commercial products if you are eating these. Jusat as important is drinking enough fluids regardless of the source of fiber. Drink 80-100 ounces of non caffeinated, non alcoholic fluids daily.

The best: The best meds for constipation are cheap: proper diet and proper fluid intake. Eat a high fiber diet and you don't need fiber supplements. Drink 80 - 100 ounces of non alcoholic, non caffeniated fluids every day. You must break bad habits if you want any relief. There is no magic pill that can replace a healthy lifestyle!

Yes: Eating sparsely as well as a low residue diet may cause constipation because of lack of adequate bulk in the diet. If you have a significant change in bowel habits see your physician or a gastroenterologist as colonoscopy would be indicated even as a screening procedure at your age.

Take him to a doctor: Constipation has many causes, and most of the time, without detailed history and examination, it is impossible to find the cause. Most of the baby's constipation is functional (there are no anatomic causes). Stools may be very hard, and often causes a crack around the anus, causing painful bm, which causes more constipation. But, there are many other causes that could become serious if left alone.
