Get an Xray: It is very possible that you have a fracture, which might be a hairline fracture and not require casting, or it might be something more serious. See an orthopedist or emergency medicine physician/sports medicine doctor to have a physical evaluation. They may be able to advise you without an x-ray, but it is likely they would want one. Can't tell: We can't tell 100% without an x-ray. If it is only swollen a little, you can bear weight and there is no bruising it is unlikely that there is a fractured bone. The only way to be sure is to have an x-ray done. ...Read more

Peroneal Tendonitis: The Peroneus Brevis muscle attaches to the base of the 5th metatarsal and often is the problem with pain in that area of the foot. Ice and massage lowers inflammation and loosens up the tendon. It usually will ge worse with first steps after sitting awhile or sleeping all night. Running probably warms the muscle/tendon up and increases bloodflow which would then make if feel better. ...Read more
