Also, an xray of the area is reasonable to evaluate the shoulder joint and the ribs in that region. If no abnormality is detected, it may be related to a muscle strain or tendonitis. ...Read more

Why does the skin on your arm around the area blood is taken from bruise after a blood test?

Why does the skin on your arm around the area blood is taken from bruise after a blood test?

Bruise: The blood vessel is punctured when blood is withdrawn during a blood test. If the vessel is not compressed long enough, blood will leak out of the vessel giving a bruise. Holding direct pressure with a cotton ball for 10 or 15 minutes is usually enough. However if a person is on platlet inhibitors such as asprin longer might be necessary. ...Read more

I had a blood test a week ago that left a small bruise, which is now large/dark purple and spreading up arm. Could there be something wrong?

Yes, if the arm is hot : To touch, and you have swelling, and see streaks of bruising going up the arm. Then you have to go immediately in the ER.If it is not hot to the touch, and no swelling or pain, then you need to call your doctor as soon as possible to be seen by her/him, and notify the lab that you are experiencing this too. That has to be documented by the lab manager. I had bloodwork done from my right arm and today I had a blood pressure artery test done on the same arm. I notice I am bruised tonight . Is this bad?

Unlikely: post venous blood draw the bruising may not show immediately. A single blood pressure measurement should not do harm. Check for a lump or pulsation at the site. If the blood draw was a few days ago, warm compresses may help resorb the bruise. ...Read more

Could a TB skin test be false positive if the needle was to deep? My arm bled after the test and now that its healing I have a large purple bruise

Could a TB skin test be false positive if the needle was to deep? My arm bled after the test and now that its healing I have a large purple bruise

Wouldn't accept it: The test is standardized to represent the reaction to material places between layers of your dermis (skin) and would become invalid if it went too deep and bled. It deserves repeating.I would worry that it could be falsely negative if the test material dissipated into deep tissue. That could lead to a delay in proper treatment. A false positive would be unlikely& need eval ...Read more

Bruise comes and goes, same spot for 6 mo. now on left arm. Had CBC, platelet, clotting test, cardiac workup, normal. Do not take aspirin. Thoughts?

Trauma: Brusises result from a local area of trauma to the skin. When taking anticoagulants or if clotting mechanisms are off, they help with extent of bruising but do not initiate the process. If the bruise is in the same site look for what might cause the problem like pressure against the site when sleeping or sitting at the computer. ...Read more
