Tests For Bacterial Infection Of The Heart Valve
Not much: Valvular endocarditis is an infection needing systemic antibiotics and possible surgery. A normal CBC does not have any relationship to the infection. It may be normal or high WBC or low wbc. There may be anemia or not. Same with platelets. If there is an abnormality of CBC with onset of endocarditis a normal CBC may reflect the pt is responding to treatment. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from ...Read more

If your troponin level is normal, does it mean that your heart valve is allright & not infected by bacterial endocarditis?Ty
Not necessarily: Elevated troponin is most often associated with heart muscle damage, as in a heart attack. Heart valves may be damaged (by infection or other processes) that may not lead to an elevated troponin. An ultrasound of the heart should help detect important damage to any involved valves. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can you advise me if having piercings with a prosthetic heart valve. subacute bacterial endocarditis?
No clear guidelines: Prosthetic valve indicates increased risk of endocarditis. Even under current, stricter AHA guidelines, you would need SBE prophylaxis before high-risk procedures, like dental cleaning/extractions, tonsillectomy, I&D of abscesses. No clear data about body piercings, so different MDs have different approaches. Discuss with your MD, but clean the area very well & care for the site after. Take care! ...Read more

Can minor heart valve leak get worse from lifting heavy stuff? EKG showed depression, 2 years ago, stress test okay then. EKG showed same thing again.
Heavy lifting: does not directly effect a heart valve leak....it may raise the blood pressure and pulse thus making a murmur sound "louder" but the actual structure of the heart is unchanged by the lifting itself BTW I am "confused" a bit about the "depressions" noted on your EKG..some valve problems lead to heart muscle enlargement..(and ST segment depression) again...lifting has only transient effects! Can a weakened mitral heart valve due to infection i revovered from be the reason for my high pulse rate, and having heart palpitations sometimes.
Not likely: There are many different types of heart valve problems, but most are acquired and not necessarily genetic. ...Read more
Devil in the details: Depends entirely on which valve and how much leaking. Some leaking of the tricuspid and pulmonic valve is 100% normal. Mild leakage of the mitral valve is technically "abnormal" but nearly universal and harmless. Mild leakage of the aortic valve is abnormal but well tolerated. Severe leakage should be followed by your heart doc and treated if certain criteria are met. ...Read more
