I tested positive for ana, and have a family history of lupus and pernicious anemia. What do I do now?

Wait: Many normal people have low-titer positive ana's and they mean nothing by themselves. If you have symptoms suggestive of lupus, continue the workup and consider seeing a rheumatologist. If you have a family history of pernicious anemia, you'd do well to get a serum B12 assay every few years. ...Read more

Ana (Definition)

An "ana" is a blood test used to screen a person for the possibility of several autoimmune diseases. It is important to remember that this is a screening test and a positive result only indicates more testing may be warranted. No blood test is perfect, and getting to a diagnosis is usually much more complex than drawing blood and looking at a number ...Read more

I tested positive ANA and anti dsdna, later testing neg. I have past diagnosis that may apply to lupus but do not do well articuliatng at dr. Help?

Tests and lupus: The question is why is the doctor running the tests? If your symptoms and physical signs are a strong indication of possible lupus, positive dsdna helps confirm a diagnosis of lupus. If the tests are run for "screening", they are worthless tests. No diagnosis of lupus or connective tissue disease can be made on antibody studies alone. ...Read more

Lupus : If your symptoms are persisting, check ANA again with titers and if ratio is strongly positive (not 1:40, but like 1:80, 1:160, 1:320, 1:640, etc) than certainly other serological tests for lupus can also be performed and lupus diagnosis can be entertained. You need to have 4/9 criteria to say it is lupus. ...Read more

Sed rate of 38, neg ana, hair loss, butterfly rash on face, reg fatigue and uti's , anemia, dysphagia, history miscarriage. Is lupus a poss. With neg ana?

Yes: ANA is just a marker that we look for to screen for lupus. It is not perfect. Just because it is negative does not mean you do not have lupus. Also, just because it is positive does not mean you have it either. ...Read more

Hight potassium, high platelets, white count, severe anemia, neg ana, old mono. What could it be. I know lupus it can still be but old mono.Never knew?

See below: Anemia can cause an elevated platelet count. Lupus is rare when ANA is negative and is less likely with a high platelet count and white blood cell count. The old mono that you mention is probably past exposure to mono. If you are not seeing a hematologist, you want to consider it. ...Read more

I recently had a positive ANA test. My dr tested folupus but it was negative. I have all the symptoms except rash. Can u have a false neg lupus test?

I recently had a positive ANA test. My dr tested folupus but it was negative. I have all the symptoms except rash. Can u have a false neg lupus test?

Keep working: Lupus is defined by a series of criteria, of which a strongly positive ANA is one. No specific test turning out negative rules out lupus. Perhaps you were tested for anti-smith(sm), which if positive hands us the diagnosis but is only positive in 1 of 3 patients. Perhaps there is a misunderstanding or you can request consultation. Lupus requires great courage -- will be thinking of you. ...Read more
