Blood test for spinal bifida?

MSAFP.: The maternal serum Alpha feto protein (msafp) test is a blood test that can be given to the mother during her pregnancy. If the levels are increased, it should be followed up by two tests - an ultrasound of the fetal spine and amniocentesis of the mother's amniotic fluid (to test for alpha-fetoprotein and acetylcholinesterase). ...Read more

What defines a spina bifida as spina bifida occulta?

What defines a spina bifida as spina bifida occulta?

Skin covering: Spina bifida occulta, like open spina bifida, is a congenital malformation involving a problem with closing of the neural tube during development. However, there is not exposed neural tissue in spina bifida occulta. There can be tracts connecting the skin to the spinal cord, or lipomas or bands (tight filum) which can cause neurologic deficit. There can also be bony issues. ...Read more

Why do spina bifida patients have a myelomeningocele repair later?

Why do spina bifida patients have a myelomeningocele repair later?

Myelomeningocele: Usually the repair of a myelomeningocele is delayed several days after birth to ensure that the child is stable for surgery and to also get a better assessment of potential neurologic deficits. As an adult, some patients develop spinal cord symptoms from tethering of the spinal cord prompting a procedure to release the tension on the spinal cord. ...Read more

Later side afects of occult spina bifida?

No: Spina bifida occulta results from failure of the two lamina of one vertebra to make a solid bony fusion. The defect is generally bisecting the spinous process vertically. No instability is present. No neurologic dysfunction is present because neural elements are not affected. But associated neurological problems which may be symptomatic are more common in association with spina bifida occulta. ...Read more

Screening/ Diagnosis: Screening tests take general populations (pregnant ) and selects sub groups that have a higher risk of a problem. The AFP test looks for a material that can show up in the blood & suggest a higher risk of a spina bifida. If the test shows a higher risk, a selective test, like high resolution ultrasound can be done to look for the spina bifida. ...Read more

What causes spina bifida? Is spina bifida caused by a spinal cord injury, or a chromosomal disorder?

What causes spina bifida? Is spina bifida caused by a spinal cord injury, or a chromosomal disorder?

Spina : Spina bifida is not an injury. It is a birth defect caused by failure of the nervous system to fully develop. When the embryo is forming, the nervous system starts out as a "neural tube" that is supposed to grow in a very specific way. If it does not, you are left with "neural tube defects" like spina bifida. There is nothing we know of that causes it for sure, but certain things make it more likely. It is more common with children that have trisomy 13, 18, or 21, but that is just an association, not a cause. They are very common, and the only thing we know of that might help prevent them is for the mother to take folate (folic acid). The hard part about that is the mother has to take folate (folic acid) very early in the pregnancy, often before she even knows she is pregnant. That is why the all women of child-bearing age are advised to take at least 0.4 mg of Folic Acid every day. ...Read more
