Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Can a 4 month old get a cough and congestion from teething?

Maybe: I can be hard to determine the exact cause of an infants symptoms... It might be related to teething or it might be a cold. Please monitor your child closely and give palliative care:
1. Cold compresses
2. Children's tylenol (acetaminophen) per the label's directions.
3. Maintain hydration.
4. Call your pediatrician if the fever increases or persists for more than 3 days. ...Read more

My baby is 8/12 old, his temp is 39 for the last 4 days, I don't know why? He has no flu no cough nothing but he start teething is that normal?

Probably a virus: At 8 1/2 months old they teeth still. When teething their resistance is down and they are more prone to pick up illnesses, especially viruses. Without other symptoms at this time it probably is a virus. If you are worried there is never harm in getting baby checked by your doctor. Fevers in that range are common for babies that age with most viral infections but should break in 3-5 days. ...Read more

Teething: Not sure of hyland products, but a pacifier, ortho, should help due to positive pressure in the bite, and a refrigerated pacifier will ease the pain due the soothing effect of cold on pain due to the easing of inflammation. Softer food for the child will also help. No too warm food. If the child is acting especially uncomfortable with certain foods, use different. If fever persists, see pediatric. ...Read more

11 month old continues to cough after RSV has cleared. Teething or something RSV related? Sometimes she coughs so much she throws up.

11 month old continues to cough after RSV has cleared. Teething or something RSV related? Sometimes she coughs so much she throws up.

Common: Infants who have RSV bronchiolitis will often cough intermittently for at least a month after the primary infection. They will also cough more with irritant exposures to dust/fragrance/smoke/etc. For the next year they can wheeze on occasion with minor colds. As long as baby is eating and playful it is likely okay. If the kid starts refusing feeds or to play they deserve a followup exam. ...Read more

My 16 week old is teething & drooling a lot and has had a stuffy nose/slight cough for 2 days. Could these be related?

No. Nasal congestion: & cough are symptoms of a viral upper respiratory illness. Teething does not cause fever, diarrhea or any other symptoms not related to the gums, although some babies have pain & irritability. Drooling at 4 months does not necessarily mean a baby is teething, just that the salivary glands are beginning to function. The central lower incisors usually erupt first, around 6 months. ...Read more

My 7 month old has a dry barking cough. At times it sounds like she cant breathe. She also has a lot of mucus in her chest. She is currently teething?

Croup: These symptoms are not due to teething. Croup is a viral infection that causes swelling of the vocal cords and a barking / seal like cough. Treatment is oral cortisone syrup, nebulized cortisone, sometimes adrenaline nebulizations. If she is having difficulty in breathing, or is getting worse and not better, she need to see a doctor. ...Read more

8 month baby - running nose, no temp, full dirty nappies, cough and teething? Is it all connected to her teething?

8 month baby - running nose, no temp, full dirty nappies, cough and teething? Is it all connected to her teething?

Might not: It looks like your child might have a viral upper respiratory infection presenting with congestion, runny nose, then loose stool or even diarrhea. Make sure he or she gets plenty of fluid or water and give him/her baby tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil if fevers develop. Symptoms might last for a week or so. Bring your child to see a doctor if symptoms do not improve. ...Read more

Upper dose limit for baby 1.5yo, 11kg. Tablet: Losec Current dose: 1tab/day ~4pm Reflux (cough) worse during teething / flu / - cry/stir night time.

Depends on factors: How much drug should be used depends on age, weight, symptoms, duration of use, etc... In the U.S., we have Nexium (esomeprazole), where the recommended dose for a 24-lb toddler is about 10 mg each day, for short-term use. Not sure if Losec (omeprazole) is approved for infants or toddlers in the U.S., but studies in adults suggest that the two drugs can be used in similar doses in adults. ...Read more

The last 3 days, my 7mo olds head feels really hot, highest temp read 100.9. Runny nose, cough, spitting up more than normal. Would it be teething?

Not teething: If these symptoms have lasted for more than 3 days, then it is probably not teething. Teething symptoms typically do not include a cough, runny nose and excessive spitting up. Teething symptoms can include a low grade fever (less than 100.7) however it should not last for more than 3 days. ...Read more

My 5 month old acts like he is teething. He is congested and has a bad cough. He isn't sleeping well and seems exhausted. This is day three and there is no fever yet. Whatshould I do?

Nasal congestion: At 5mo the primary cause of congestion are irritants or colds. House dust, fragrance, perfumes, detergent or cleaning products all leave scents that don't bother adults but irritate a babies nose. A good nasal clean out with saline can remove much of this irritant load, but removing the offending irritants from babies life helps more in the long run. Irritants aggravate colds & nasal wash helps. ...Read more

14 month old, teething, getting 5 teeth all at once. Has runny nose with yellow snot and has a chesty sounding cough. Is this part of teething or not?

NO: Cough and cold are not part of teething. It is usually secondary to a viral infection. If your child is having only cold and cough, with no difficulty breathing or fever, you can treat runny nose with nasal saline drops and suctioning nose with bulb syringe. No otc cough medicines are recommended for his age since they don't work and can may have adverse side effects. ...Read more
