I'm 10 weeks pregnant and have been using desert essence tea tree oil toothpaste. Is tree oil toothpaste harmful in pregnancy?
Not a fan...: I am not aware of any adverse effects on pregnancy from tree oil products. They are derived from the indian "neem" tree which was thought to have ayurvedic antiseptic properties... Unfortunately a large percentage of indians suffer from severe periodontal disease anyway... Four weeks pregnant. Used tea tree oil toothpaste four times. Found out it is very unsafe, can this cause birth defects?
Tree oil safety: Look, there are no studies which can definitely establish the safety for use of many products during pregnancy, medical ethics are going to prevent double blind studies on pregnant women of products which might adversely effect the mother or the fetus. Is it safe, and healthy, to add a drop of tea tree oil to my toothpaste to prevent cavaties? Will it help existing cavaties? I won't ingest.
Safe?: As long as you do not swallow it you should be safe however your teeth are another issue. The oil may leave a film on the tooth that will make it easier for the bacterial colonies to form and harder for you to brush them off so if it were my mouth i would not use it. ...Read more
Herbal remedy: Tea tree oil derived from the melaleuca tree is used as a topical antiseptic for bacterial and fungal infections. I can't tell you if its effective or not. It's also used as a substitute for tea. Soap & water: Why do people insist on applying things to cuts and scrapes? All you should do is clean it thoroughly with soap and water, and cover it with a clean bandaid. Change the bandaid daily; cuts heal faster when they are covered. ...Read more
Why?: While tea tree oil may have some mild antibacterial activity, it has no effect on dirt. Soap and water is a quicker and much more straightforward solution to your problem. ...Read more
What tree ?: Many are referring to the eucalyptus or possibly the mellaluka tree. There are many others such as the cinchola tree which the bark is known for treating malaria. Please don't see the words tea tree and think of a medicinal that is a cure all.
