I got a td shot on July 13, 2015 can I get a tdap in October, 2015? I need the dtap to be able to get in the NCIU to see my grandaughter.

Absolutely!: It is perfectly safe and thank you for thinking of the safety of your granddaughter and the other kids in the NICU by getting protected against whooping cough (the "p"). By the way, at your age you should not get dtap, but Tdap. Same vaccines but different quantities of the vaccine components to provide someone your age with the right amount of each. I got the tdap/dtap shot 10 months ago. I'm 29 weeks pregnant. Do I need to get it again? Is it safe to get it twice in a year?

Depends: If you had the equivalent vaccines in childhood and have a normal immune system there is no reason to get it again. If you never got any before, a second dose would be reasonable, ...Read more

Can you tell me if I've had the dtap vaccine, do I need the tdap vaccine?

You received DTap?: DTap is given up to those under age 7 years and first licensed for use in July 1996 (you would have been too old I think) Tdap is used at age 11 years & above. Booster every 10 years important to maintain immunity. ...Read more

Vaccine: The Tdap has tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria protection, but the Td has tetanus and diphtheria protection only. Tetanus and diphtheria boosters are recommended every 8-10 years (overlap is ok) to prevent tetanus infections. Tdap is recommended to decrease pertussis infection in the community, esp for new parents so they cannot pass pertussis to their children. ...Read more
