When should adolescents and adults get vaccinated against tetanus? Should they get vaccinated with td or tdap?
I got a td shot on July 13, 2015 can I get a tdap in October, 2015? I need the dtap to be able to get in the NCIU to see my grandaughter.
Absolutely!: It is perfectly safe and thank you for thinking of the safety of your granddaughter and the other kids in the NICU by getting protected against whooping cough (the "p"). By the way, at your age you should not get dtap, but Tdap. Same vaccines but different quantities of the vaccine components to provide someone your age with the right amount of each. dtap is for children under age 7. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
What's the difference between the Td and Tdap shot? What's the booster that has to be given every 10 years? Td or Tdap? What if I get 2x within year?
Vaccine: The Tdap has tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria protection, but the Td has tetanus and diphtheria protection only. Tetanus and diphtheria boosters are recommended every 8-10 years ( overlap is ok) to prevent tetanus infections. Tdap is recommended to decrease pertussis infection in the community, esp for new parents so they cannot pass pertussis to their children. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What's the difference in td and tdap? We were vaccinated for whooping cough 2yrs ago. Does that count as a tetanus shot too or have i misunderstood?
Tdap: Tdap contains both tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis), so yes that does count as a tetanus shot. Close household contacts of young infants should receive tdap to protect them from whooping cough, which can be deadly. Also pregnant woman should receive a dose with each pregnancy. Tetanus shots protect against tetanus for clean cuts for 10 yrs, for "dirty" (rusty or dirty wounds) 5 yrs. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Difficult situations: I have empathy for couples facing difficult decisions during pregnancy. I believe that the best information comes from multiple sources. Therefore, i referred this question to clinical genetics here. Speaking with a woman's obgyn doctor can also help. Finally having a referral to a maternal-fetal medicine subspecialist can be beneficial so that a couple can put into perspective all the information. ...Read more
