9 month aftr TB meningitis my fiancee has mild dystonia wch disappears while she sleeps. Why? And it is also getting better in last months and also having mild hemiparesis. Are these sign of recovery

Healing: Dystonia and hemiparesis are common while recovering from TB meningitis and can improve totally or have some residual effect depending on the type and location of damage to the brain from the infection. I hope she had a ct scan or MRI to evaluate her brain which can help predict the amount of damage. People usually get worse while healing then slowly improve. ...Read more

Kindly see this report http://goo. Gl/ajysem and tell me how my 22 years old fiancee recovering after TB meningitis. I am really stressed need help.

TB meningitis: From the reported results of the ct scan these finding suggest severe and possibly permanent damage to the central nervous system. She has an obstructive hydrocephalus as well and may need placement of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. The prognosis is guarded. Sorry. ...Read more

My 22 years old fiancee has mild dystonia of left side which disappears while she sleeps… why so? She contracted TB meningitis 9 months back.

Dystonia is common: This is common as a side effect of having TB meningitis. It can wax and wane especially when tired, stressed, or sleeping. Overall it tends to decrease over time. If she received a full course of therapy and she is involved with physical therapy, she should regain most of her function. ...Read more

Mechanic sir, my 22 yrs old fiancee recovered a lot physically in last 9 months after TB meningitis bt she has mild dystonia and hemiparesis which got better in past months, can I expect her recovery?

Mechanic sir, my 22 yrs old fiancee recovered a lot physically in last 9 months after TB meningitis bt she has mild dystonia and hemiparesis which got better in past months, can I expect her recovery?

Age advantage: At 24, she has a far better chance to continue to achieve some degree of recovery, and typically, spontaneous brain healing will proceed for about 18-24 months after the acute event. Suspect she will always have some degree of dystonia and weakness, but this will be less apparent over next few months. Would use physical and occupational therapies to aid coping. Suspect continued improvement. ...Read more

Can baclofen 10 mg thrice and tizanidine 2 mg twice daily make a person drowsy? 22 years old fiancee is advised with these for spasm with TB medicine after TB meningitis. Can this slow her recovery??

Can baclofen 10 mg thrice and tizanidine 2 mg twice daily make a person drowsy? 22 years old fiancee is advised with these for spasm with TB medicine after TB meningitis. Can this slow her recovery??

Yes: Sorry, here in US I've never seen a case of TB meningitis but those are HEFTY doses of meds. I've had pts tell me that 2 mg of tizanidine once a day all by itself made them intolerably drowsy. It shouldn't delay recovery but I wouldn't be surprised if she spent her recovery in a fairly torpid state. ...Read more

22 years old fiancee had TB meningitis with obstructive hydrocephalus in july 2013 but doctor didn't place a shunt as her condition was getting better. Are they right at there place or shunt is must?

22 years old fiancee had TB meningitis with obstructive hydrocephalus in july 2013 but doctor didn't place a shunt as her condition was getting better. Are they right at there place or shunt is must?

Hydrocephalus: This condition is unfortunate. The good thing is that treatment resulted in improvement. As long as clinically she improved there is no need for a shunt right now. If symptoms like a persistent headache, or MRI shows very large ventricles then a shunt may be considered. As long as there is improvement then one can wait. ...Read more

Nw after 9 months of TB meningitis my 22 yrs old fiancee can remember new things but still face issue with old memories and she has chronic bilateral infarcts and issues with walking, will she recover

Partially yes: She has retrograde amnesia. Slowly she will get better but may never be completely be normal. The fact that she is 22 will help but the most recovery happens the first 3-6 months after any infection or strokes in the brain but time will only tell. ...Read more

Its been around 18 mnths fr my fiancee aftr TB meningitis and mentally she's better, jst having trouble in walking nd mild weakness in right hand. Will it get better or not? She hd lacunar infarcts.

Neuropathy: This cannot be answered definitively. Sometimes nerves will gradually and very slowly heal, but if there has been an area of infarction unless the stimuli can find alternative pathways it may not improve. In either case you must be very very patient. ...Read more

Lacunar infarcts are most common aftr TB meningitis nd people get well but my fiancee still has mild weakness in her right limbs, spams and fatigue even at 1 yr mark. Will she get functional outcome?

Hope: People often begin to recover within hours or days of a lacunar stroke. Lacunar strokes have a better rate of recovery than other strokes that involve larger blood vessels. More than 90 percent of people with a lacunar stroke will recover substantially within the first three months following the stroke. Keep therapy going at home. Good luck. ...Read more

21 yr old fiancee had TB meningitis in july 2013 wid bilateral infarcts, she has recovered alot bt still has weakness in right side nd spasm in lower limbs nd very sleepy most times. Will she get well

Sad situation: The information is difficult to provide. TB meningitis with cerebral infarcts will cause permanent loss of function in the areas destroyed by the disease. Nerve tissue does not regenerate like many other tissues. At 21, the recovery potential would be much greater than a 40 yo, but still unpredictable. Now that you are a year out from the illness, further progress, if any, may be minimal. ...Read more

My fiancee is getting better mentally aftr 9 month of TB meningitis but old Mri say acute bilateral infarcts in caudate, thalamus and left internal capsule. Wil mild limb spasm nd weakness be better?

Expect problems: TB meningitis is a devastating disease. With the findings you describe I would expect significant permanent disabilities. Some areas of function may respond to therapy, but once brain tissue dies, there will be permanent effects on function. ...Read more

Not curable, but: Early developmental intervention will help promote development. Was it tuberculous meningitis, treated early & completely eradicated? Aftr 9 mnths of TB meningitis my 22 yrs old fiancee stil feels terrible pain during her physical therapy of legs? She HS mild dystonia of right nd mild hemiparesis of left, taking baclofen+tizanidine

Neuropathy/neuralgia: Your fiancé has suffered a serious neurological condition. Clearly at nine months she is still working through significant neurologic deficits –hemiparesis, spasm and pain. Baclofen and tizanidine are primarily for spasms. Additional pain related medications include Neurontin or lyrica (pregabalin). She should be under neurologic care and treatment – hopefully already is. Avoid narcotics as possible. ...Read more

How long TB meningitis takes to cure fully. And how long my 21 years old female friend take to be normal again? Why swelling takes long to go down?

TB meningitis: As indicated earlier this disease can produce damage to the brain and spinal cord that may not be fully reversible. Brain swelling may be due to the onset of obstruction to flow of spinal fluid from the ventricles to the spinal subarachnoid space. She may never be completely normal, or it may take a very long time period. ...Read more

What can cause TB meningitis twice in a person? What are the precautionary measures for the rest of the life for a survivor?

TB: The second episode suggests that the first time around the treatment failed to eradicate all the organisms, and the recurrence is not reinfection, but recrudescence. Tb outside the lungs results from spread thru the bloodstream to various areas of the body and reactivation at those sites later on, . You may have to remain on treatment for a much longer time, but need more info to advise. ...Read more

What is main difference between symptoms and diagnosis of asymptomatic neurosyphilis and TB meningitis? Can one be misdiagnosed as other?

Big difference: Neurosyphilis is usually slow in onset and causes balance problems and dementia-like symptoms. Tb meningitis comes on more quickly and tends to cause double vision or numbness on the face, trouble talking, confusion or stroke-like symptoms. A spinal tap is the best way to make the diagnosis of either test. There is a blood test to look for a syphilis infection. ...Read more
