Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection (Definition)

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an infectious organism that spreads by droplets coughed out by an infected person. Infection is established initially in lungs, but can spread within lungs & to other body parts, or can become latent, with reactivation occurring years to decades later. With effective treatment, it can be completely eliminated although drug resistant ...Read more

I hav a friend dianose w/ TB meningitis and now she is under treatment of TB meds (ripe) is dat means she hav active TB in lungs and is dat contagious?

I hav a friend dianose w/ TB meningitis and now she is under treatment of TB meds (ripe) is dat means she hav active TB in lungs and is dat contagious?

Maybe: I'm sorry to hear that your friend has meningitis. She has an infection in the membranes covering her brain and spinal cord. In this case, the organism is the same one that causes tuberculosis. This does not mean that she necessarily has TB in her lungs but she may be contagious. However, she will likely need lots of help and support from friends such as yourself.

How to figure out if I might have had TB meningitis?

How to figure out if I might have had TB meningitis?

Why do you ask?: TB meningitis is a godawful disease and if you don't recall being very seriously sick with something similar, you'd best direct your curiosity in some other direction. Your physician can advise you about whether you have / have had / may have TB and if so what to do.

My 22 years old fiancee has mild dystonia of left side which disappears while she sleeps… why so? She contracted TB meningitis 9 months back.

My 22 years old fiancee has mild dystonia of left side which disappears while she sleeps… why so? She contracted TB meningitis 9 months back.

Dystonia is common: This is common as a side effect of having TB meningitis. It can wax and wane especially when tired, stressed, or sleeping. Overall it tends to decrease over time. If she received a full course of therapy and she is involved with physical therapy, she should regain most of her function.

TB meningitis: From the reported results of the ct scan these finding suggest severe and possibly permanent damage to the central nervous system. She has an obstructive hydrocephalus as well and may need placement of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. The prognosis is guarded. Sorry.

After operated from TB meningitis, can the person have a normal life again?

After operated from TB meningitis, can the person have a normal life again?

Yes: Yes it is possible. It depends on at what stage it was caught and if there already any neurological symptoms. Also, this will depend on the types of anti-tb medications used and their effectiveness. This is something that will need to be monitored by your doctor.

Recovering 3 montha after TB meningitis she cries a lot but say has no pain. Why she cries, she is improving slowly? Any advise?

TB: This is a very severe illness that even when treated can leave residual changes in brain substance. She is presumably being see by a pediatric infectious disease expert or neurologist. Take her back to see them and get this worked out.

What can cause TB meningitis twice in a person? What are the precautionary measures for the rest of the life for a survivor?

TB: The second episode suggests that the first time around the treatment failed to eradicate all the organisms, and the recurrence is not reinfection, but recrudescence. Tb outside the lungs results from spread thru the bloodstream to various areas of the body and reactivation at those sites later on, . You may have to remain on treatment for a much longer time, but need more info to advise.

How long TB meningitis takes to cure fully. And how long my 21 years old female friend take to be normal again? Why swelling takes long to go down?

How long TB meningitis takes to cure fully. And how long my 21 years old female friend take to be normal again? Why swelling takes long to go down?

TB meningitis: As indicated earlier this disease can produce damage to the brain and spinal cord that may not be fully reversible. Brain swelling may be due to the onset of obstruction to flow of spinal fluid from the ventricles to the spinal subarachnoid space. She may never be completely normal, or it may take a very long time period.

What is main difference between symptoms and diagnosis of asymptomatic neurosyphilis and TB meningitis? Can one be misdiagnosed as other?

What is main difference between symptoms and diagnosis of asymptomatic neurosyphilis and TB meningitis? Can one be misdiagnosed as other?

Big difference: Neurosyphilis is usually slow in onset and causes balance problems and dementia-like symptoms. Tb meningitis comes on more quickly and tends to cause double vision or numbness on the face, trouble talking, confusion or stroke-like symptoms. A spinal tap is the best way to make the diagnosis of either test. There is a blood test to look for a syphilis infection.

9 month aftr TB meningitis my fiancee has mild dystonia wch disappears while she sleeps. Why? And it is also getting better in last months and also having mild hemiparesis. Are these sign of recovery

Healing: Dystonia and hemiparesis are common while recovering from TB meningitis and can improve totally or have some residual effect depending on the type and location of damage to the brain from the infection. I hope she had a ct scan or MRI to evaluate her brain which can help predict the amount of damage. People usually get worse while healing then slowly improve.

Can someone with no earlier symptoms of TB get TB meningitis & go unconscious all of sudden just after having severe headache for few days?

Can someone with no earlier symptoms of TB get TB meningitis & go unconscious all of sudden just after having severe headache for few days?

Unlikely: Mycobacterium tuberculosis is spread by inhaling respiratory particles from an infected person. Tb is a slow-growing bacteria, taking months or years to cause infection. It is possible but very rare for TB to cause disseminated infection (like tuberculous meningitis) without first causing pulmonary (like shortness of breath) or constitutional symptoms (like weight loss or night sweats). Take care!

Meningitis: Tb meningitis is a very serious condition. It can overtake the nervous system and cause alteration of awareness, loss of consciousness, seizures, etc. A full course of treatment is very important.

21 yrs old female had TB meningitis last yr. She still has issues like one side weakness. Can Ganoderma enhance recovery? Any side effect of ganoderma

Nope: Ganoderma certainly will not hurt but the damage from TB meningitis is due in part to her own immune system fighting the infection and the resultant inflammation and recovery. Steroids immediately afterward, good nutrition, physical therapy and time are you best chance at recovery.

Physical therapy: It sounds like she has made good progress. She can improve and maintain her recovery with continued physical therapy, strength training, and balance/gait training. Http://www. Nlm. Nih. Gov/medlineplus/rehabilitation. Html

A year after TB meningitis my 22yr gf can go upstairs with no or minimal support but she has fear of falling while walking straight so she doesn't try and she screams so loud sometimes. Please advise

A year after TB meningitis my 22yr gf can go upstairs with no or minimal support but she has fear of falling while walking straight so she doesn't try and she screams so loud sometimes. Please advise

Anxiety, panic: It's only natural for her to be fearful given her history of TB meningitis. Her fear of falling is overpowering the objective fact that she has physically improved. She should be seen by a psychotherapist who could help engage her in cognitive behavioral therapy to overcome this hurdle in her recovery. Http://www. Nlm. Nih. Gov/medlineplus/panicdisorder. Html
