Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection (Definition)

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an infectious organism that spreads by droplets coughed out by an infected person. Infection is established initially in lungs, but can spread within lungs & to other body parts, or can become latent, with reactivation occurring years to decades later. With effective treatment, it can be completely eliminated although drug resistant ...Read more

Done with 9mos tb treatment. Had xray and its normal. No tb symptoms ever since. Mine is latent tb. How come tb gold test is positive?

White cells remember: The TB Gold test (Quantiferon TB test) looks for the ability of a person's white blood cells to remember and to react to TB bacteria proteins in the lab. If her white blood cells remember and react to TB proteins in the lab, the test is positive. That means as long as her immune system and her white blood cells are healthy and working properly, she should always have a positive test result. ...Read more

TB +: Your TB test will always stay positive. It just means you have been exposed to TB- not that you do or do not have the active disease.

Dr. Martin raff?why I can not take PPD test? Tb heal 10 yrs ago and qtf-gold positive last week

Dr. Martin raff?why I can not take PPD test? Tb heal 10 yrs ago and qtf-gold positive last week

PPD: You have living tubercle bacilli in your body and they will aways be there. Not only is there then no value to the PPD (it will be positive due to similar factors that make the quantiferon positive), but you are at risk of having a very severe reaction to the PPD and losing tissue in the area in which the PPD is placed. Please do not do this. Unnecessary and dangerous. Best wishes. ...Read more

How accurate is this test :quantiferon-tb gold? And can they show up like false positive? I have test done and don't like the results I see. Scared

QFT Gold : Quantiferon gold can give false negetive or positive. Blood samples must be processed within 12 hours after collection while white blood cells are still viable. Test is not reliable among persons recently exposed to m. Tuberculosis, and in immunocompromised persons. False positive results can occur with m. Szulgai, m. Kansasii, and m. Marinum. ...Read more

My TB test ran positive so now I have to get a TB gold test and chest x-ray. Won't those be positive too? What's the point of doing more testing?

Screening test: What you had was a screening test that only shows you were exposed to tb, not a test to say you have an active case. Next tests are to see if you have or had active disease. ...Read more

2 TB skin tests. Bumps measured 15cm. RN stated I possibly have LTBI & ordered QuantiFERON Gold in-tube test. Could anything cause a false positive?

2 TB skin tests. Bumps measured 15cm. RN stated I possibly have LTBI & ordered QuantiFERON Gold in-tube test. Could anything cause a false positive?

Not at 15cm, but...: The bump is more likely 15mm, because 15cm is 6 inches and HUGE. A 15mm bump on a screening test is big but may still be a false positive (a screening test means the patient has NO symptoms of tuberculosis). If a patient has contacted somebody with TB, or has current symptoms, she likely has a true positive unless her bump is due to past BCG vaccine. The Quantiferon-TB blood test is very accurate. ...Read more

If you do a TB Gold blood test for volunteering at school, and it's negative, when would be the next time you should do the test?

If you do a TB Gold blood test for volunteering at school, and it's negative, when would be the next time you should do the test?

Not sure what: The TB gold blood test is but if it's a TB screening test, you would not need to repeat it unless you think you have been exposed to TB again. Otherwise, you should tell others that you had a negative TB test in Oct 2015, as prospective employers/ schools will want to have that information available or copy of that test result. ...Read more

I was infected lung TB around ten years ago and treated for one year then got recover. Qtf-gold positive last week. What does it mean?

Tuberculosis: Your treatment with inh is unlikely to have eliminated all of these organisms. It is meant to reduce the risk of recrudescent infection after having had primary exposure. Mycobacterium tuberculosis will live in your body for lifetime without symptoms if you are fortunate, and the positive quantiferon is evidence of its presence. You should be fine, but tell any doctors you see that you're positive. ...Read more

Tb recovered 10yrs ago. Last year miscarriage at 13th wk. Need treatment for qtf-gold positive now? Relationships between them? Safe to pregnant again?

TB: Not sure if last year's miscarriage related to TB or not, but most likely not since TB is not a common cause of miscarriage, anyway. If you have positive quantiferon test, you may need treatment, but I would avoid pregnancy at all costs during the treatment, because the drugs are quite toxic. ...Read more

10 yrs ago recover from lung tb. Miscarriage at 13th weeks last year. Qtf-gold positive last week. Need treatment for TB again? Safe to pregnant again?

Treatment: Positive quantiferon test indicates you have either active or latent infection. You will most likely need treatment. The choice of drugs and length of therapy depends on chest x-ray and sputum (if you have any) test findings. It also depends on if you have any symptoms. You need to see either a pulmonologist or an infectious disease doctor. ...Read more

How do I know if I have a positive TB test?

If there is a bump: When TB infects the body the infection gets walled off by antibodies. The medical person injects a manufactured antibody under your skin that reacts to the TB antibody. If a bump appears at the injection site after 48 hours it means you have the antibody to TB already in your body and therefore have TB infection. It does not mean that you have active disease or are contagious. ...Read more

How would i be able to tell if I have a positive TB test?

Size of induration: After the TB test, the skin at the site can develop swelling (induration). The size of this swelling (measured in millimeters by a health care provider within 48-72 hours) determines whether you have a positive result or not. It is important to not measure the area of redness but the actual size of the swelling around the test site. The cut off value for positive test is based on yr risk factors. ...Read more

What do positive TB test results mean? How should I interpret the positive result of a TB test?

Infection with Tb: When someone is infected with tuberculosis (TB) germs, the body develops a protective response against them. The TB skin test is a test of the body's response to tb, not the germs themselves. One can have an active infection where they are coughing out TB germs and are a risk to spread tb. Or the body may have had the infection long ago and controlled it so there is no risk now of spread. ...Read more

Exposure not disease: A positive TB test indicates past exposure to the bug that causes tb. Whether you have active TB disease or not depends on whether you are symptomatic or have signs of TB disease on chest xray or other appropriate tests based on your symptoms. Those that only have a positive TB test but none of the above have latent tb. Talk to your doctor who can do additional tests to figure out if you have tb. ...Read more
