Your : Your symptoms are not unusual after having a metallic filling placed. This may be caused by a number of factors, either alone or in combination: 1. The nerve in the tooth was disturbed by the action of cutting on the tooth, either through vibration or heat produced. This can lead to a temporary irritation to the nerve that should resolve over the course of a few days. 2. The filling was very large and deep. Because of the materials ability to transmit changes in temperature more easily than tooth structure, the nerve may be reacting to this stimulus. Again this should decrease with time as the nerve lays down a additional layer of material, repairative dentin, that will act as an additional insulation. 3. The filling may be left over contoured. This will create a sensation of the filling being "high" and cause the tooth to be sensitive to biting pressure or changes in temperature. This situation needs to be addressed by your dentist by smoothing down the filling. Once done the tooth should begin to feel better. Failure to do this may lead to the filling fracturing. 4. Occasionally you may have a temporary metallic taste in the mouth after getting a new metallic filling, thus should also resolve in a sort time. If you have situation #3 contact your dentist tomorrow. If the symptoms do not begin to resolve from the other reasons in a week or so contact your dentist for evaluation. ...Read more

How do I find out why can I taste metal in my mouth after dental work?

How do I find out why can I taste metal in my mouth after dental work?

Metal taste in mouth: Not sure what you had done, but i would want to know exactly what was done - did you have silver fillings done (which leave a metal taste for a couple days) or did you have some bridgework done (that might contain one of several different alloys)?. I would ask your dentist for specifics regarding this, just so you know what's going into your mouth - some metals are safer than others. ...Read more

Oral Hygiene: Sometimes bacteria trapped in the throat and tonsils and tongue can give a metal taste sensation. Brush regularly, gargle, and use a tongue scraper. If the problem persists, consider seeing a dentist. There are other causes for this, but they would not generally be triggered by the things that do this to you (sneeze, laugh). ...Read more
