What is tarceva (erlotinib)?

Targeted therapy: It is a targeted therapy. It is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor pill that targets part of the egfr pathway. Recently we have learned that there a several gene mutations that are found in lung cancer. What types of lung cancer is tarceva (erlotinib) used for?

What types of lung cancer is tarceva (erlotinib) used for?

NSCLC (EGFR mutation): Lung cancer is broadly divided into two types; (1) non-small cell lung cancer (nsclc) & (2) small cell lung cancer.

When biopsy shows nsclc, pathologists do further testing to determine specific mutations in cancer cells. If the testing shows that cancer cells express epidermal growth factor receptor (egfr), tarceva (erlotinib) maybe indicated for targeted therapy. ...Read more

How long does the nausea side effect from radiation treatment for lung cancer last?   how do you tell if nausea is caused by radiation or tarceva (erlotinib)?

How long does the nausea side effect from radiation treatment for lung cancer last?   how do you tell if nausea is caused by radiation or tarceva (erlotinib)?

Not from radiation: Most lung cancer treated with radiation does not cause nausea unless the fields are large and on the left bottom part of the lung overlaps the stomach. Chemo is systemic and more likely the cause of the nausea. Lung cancer can easily go to the brain and the presenting sign can be nausea so make sure a brain scan was negative. ...Read more

King's english: oral medication in the category of targeted therapies that interferes with the molecular mechanisms that make cancer cells grow. When is tarceva (erlotinib) indicated?

Cancer: Specifically lung cancer, but perhaps others, in which a specific mutation is present. For now it is only used for people with metastatic lung cancer, but some other forms of cancer in which specific activating egfr mutations are present. For those with the proper activating mutations, it is very effective, but the response typically does not last. Tumors evolve the means to adapt to the drug. ...Read more
