What's the best way to taper off 20 MG of lexapro (escitalopram)?

W/ the Dr's help!: It's always best to have the Dr monitor the taper - these drugs can be dangerous to various body systems as you come off. It's a slow one too. Down 2.5mg per week is consider a quick schedule! Faster would be foolish. Work w/ a Dr. Best wishes! ...Read more

Lexapro (escitalopram) taper: One option is to taper by 2.5mg. Every 4-7 days until you are down to 2.5mg. Daily, then take 2.5mg. Every other day until you run out. A better option isto discuss with your prescribing doctor who knows you best. ...Read more

I've only been on Lexapro 10mg for 5 days and I want to stop taking them. Should I stop completely or taper off?

Stop but tell Doctor: Since you have only been on it for 5 days and that is not a high dose it should be OK to just stop, though if you had been on it longer I would suggest reducing to 5 mg a day for awhile. Please tell your Dr. That you stopped.
You don't say why you stopped but it can cause side effects and it can take time to see the benefits.
There are other treatments you can try- please see my comment. ...Read more

I am currently on 15mg lexapro for a year or so due to anxiety. Will be thinking of tapering down soon. Any advice on pitfalls/ what to what out for?

Taper: 1. Recommend doing this under your doctor's supervision. 2. Taper - don't just stop. 3. If you have a robust rebound in symptoms as you taper - your doctor may instruct you to increase dose back up to last effective dose. Good luck. ...Read more

After tapering down Lexapro (escitalopram) from 15 to 2.5 mg. For the last week I'm taking 2.5mg. Can I stop now or I should continue to tapper down?

Yes and no: Depends partly on how long you have been taking lexapro (escitalopram). And partly on whether you have had good psychotherapy to help you deal with what you have been taking Lexapro (escitalopram) for. And partly on your own neurochemistry. Seems to me that a slow weaning from antidepressants is best. Gives your brain a chance to adjust. I would continue to taper off. ...Read more

I am taking. 75 Ativan for the last week while my Lexapro (escitalopram) starts to work. Will I have to taper if I have to take it for several more weeks?

A short taper: It may not cause a lot of physical dependency, but unless there is a compelling reason to stop the Ativan (lorazepam) quickly (high risk for dependency, seizure disorder, past dependency, adverse reactions), a taper over a week or so might ease the transition. Hard to tell how much the antidepressant is working, so it is good to back off on the benzodiazepine a little gradually, esp if anxiety was severe. ...Read more

My Dr has taken me off lexapro and told me to go ahead and start taking effexor (venlafaxine) with no tapering off. Do I still need to expect with drawl symptoms fr?

Stopping Lexapro (escitalopram): You don't say what dose of Lexapro you've been taking or for how long. Both dosage and duration of Lexapro are factors in determining how to discontinue this med. That said, since Effexor (venlafaxine) has the same serotonin increasing property as Lexapro, withdrawal from abruptly stopping is less likely. However, if you experience any withdrawal symptoms, eg, malaise, nausea, insomnia, tell prescribing doc. ...Read more

Hey, been on Lexapro (escitalopram) for 1 month at 5 mg. It makes my OCD worse I want to quit. Will tapering within 3 weeks cause major problems?

Lexapro (escitalopram): Please contact your medical expert who prescribed this to let them know you are coming off. But for just one month and at such a very low dose it is probably safe just to stop.

The doctor will want to discuss this with you and find another option so that you are still safe mentally. ...Read more

Quit Lexapro (escitalopram) cold turkey after 8 weeks 4 days ago bc I didn't feel it worked. No side effects, but wondering if I should take low doses & taper off.

Where's the Dr?: It sounds like you may be lucky and are doing okay if you have no w/drawal symptoms, but you are right to think that tapering is usually a good idea. But, where's the Dr in all this? You really are best off telling them about your plan. It's a fine thing to be ultimately in charge of things, but you have a team to work with and it's best to be partners. ...Read more

Straight switch from Zoloft to lexapro (escitalopram). Doc told me to just switch without tapering off. Is this ok. Was on 150mg Zoloft going to 20 mg of lexapro (escitalopram).

Zoloft to Lexapro (escitalopram): Many physicians will do a cross taper gradually lowering the dose of one antidepressant while raising the dose of another. If however it has been determined that the zoloft has been of absolutely no benefit than there is no need for a cross taper. The Lexapro (escitalopram) should block any possible ssri discontinuation syndrome. Discontinuation symptoms with zoloft have been reported to be 1 to 2% but in my clinical experience have actually been far less than that. You should have no problem doing this. Best wishes. ...Read more
