5 days into my "flu" , 2 trips to hospital and i was finally prescribed tamiflu (oseltamivir) by my dr. Is it going to help at all to take it at this point?

Not really: To be effective it needs to be taken within 48 hours or earlier from the initial onset of symptoms. If all goes well, it shaves only 1-2 days off the course of the flu. Best treatment is prevention. Start by getting flu shot next year before season starts! hope you feel better soon! stock up on orange juice and chicken soup. ...Read more

I've been on tamiflu (oseltamivir) for 48 hours, & have cut off contact with my 10 month old to prevent infecting him. When can I safely care for him again?

Depends: Most will shed virus fever or not for at least 1 week after symptoms start. The Tamiflu slows viral replication but does not eliminate viral shedding. Good hand washing and a mask may prevent transfer of virus. If the kid was with you during the early fever phase he was likely exposed already. ...Read more

Usual flu s/s: What you are describing are pretty typical influenza signs and symptoms. Even though you are on tamiflu, (oseltamivir) these are not going to disappear today or tomorrow. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) reduces the length of illness by a day or two, but until then, you will feel like you do and run fever as you are. If the urinary symptoms worsen, make sure you have not developed a urinary tract infection on top of things. ...Read more

I have type a flu. I took tamiflu (oseltamivir) then threw up an hour & a half later. Did the tamiflu (oseltamivir) have enough time to get in my system ?

Yes: If at least an hour has passed between when you swallowed the medicine and when you threw up, your body has started to absorb some of the medicine. Talk with your doc about taking something for nausea or vomiting [like Meclizine or prescription zofran]. Sorry to hear that you have the flu. Hope you are feeling better soon. ...Read more

It blocks neuraminidase, an enzyme in influenza virus; by doing this, it prevents the flu virus from detaching from the host cell and slows the spread of the virus. It comes in a tablet form, as ...Read more
