Is talking to yourself a sign of mental illness?

Is talking to yourself a sign of mental illness?

Not necessarily: Talking to oneself can mean a lot of different things based on how you were raised, your inner world, your relative degree of disinhibition and the robustness of the social network of an individual. It can be embarrassing and some people may think that an individual who talks to themself is seeing and hearing things. It could be a problem if it cannot be curtailed in socially appropriate ways.

Why is it seen as attention seeking when you talk about your mental illness?

Attention seeking?: I imagine this depends on the person making such a statement, as it implies a judgment rather than an assessment of facts. People talk with me about their mental illnesses all the time, and I don't call it "attention seeking." however, I'm a psychiatrist, and this is why they come to me. If someone is telling about their struggles in social or other situations, others may think what they think.

Maybe more than one: Social anxieties/phobias are often associated with negative thoughts about others and their attitudes towards you. Do I have a mental disorder if I don't stand up for myself anymore? People talk bad about me to my face or behind my back. I don't do anything.

Possibly: Many reasons can cause such reactions -- including depression and various anxiety disorders. Also trauma can result in shame responses, making it hard to stand up for yourself. Or, you have learned from early childhood that asserting yourself is not appropriate, and are simply following family-given rules. You can get help with any of these issues by working with a psychiatrist or psychologist.
