Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective oral medications that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin (also known as the combination pill) and one with just progestin. The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg; and 2) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ...Read more

OCP Problems: It is not uncommon to have irregular bleeding at any time with pill usage. Make sure you take the pill the same time each day. After the next cycle you can try taking the pill at night if you take it in the morning and vice versa. If this is a chronic problem, you can always change to a different contraceptive pill. ...Read more

Taking yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) contraceptive pill for the second time but not meshing with me. What other contraceptives you suggest?

Intrauterine device: Age and hormones don't mix well. The risk of blood clotting increase dysproportionately, that is, the risk is much higher than in a younger woman. An intrauterine device may be a good option, especially a copper T IUD. It lasts for 10 year, so likely into menopause, and they are worry free other than that they cause some women to have longer and heavier periods. ...Read more

I have read that taking a certain dosage of normal contraceptive pill eg yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) cud be the equivalent of the emergency pill. Is this true?

Yes, but........: The emergency contraceptive is nothing more than high-dose pills to alter the lining of the uterus to interfere with implantation. Please contact your physician regarding how to use. But remember, emergency contraception is only 85% effective when taken within the therapeutic window. So, time is ticking..... ...Read more

Needs evaluation: Since you are no longer taking birth control pills I doubt the pain is related to that. Abdominal pain is a vague symptom with many many causes. You will probably need to schedule a visit to try to determine what to do next. ...Read more

Does duromine affect the contraceptive pill which I'm on? I'm on yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol)

Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) & Duromine: Anecdotally, these two drugs have been touted on the blogs as "the best combination for weight loss, " but appetite suppressant Phentermine marketed as duromine and ionamin, (phentermine) was officially withdrawn in britain by the european commission. This addictive drug, which is similar to amphetamine or speed, is linked to heart palpitations and high blood pressure and could cause damage to heart valves...... ...Read more

?: If you didn't have a withdrawal bleed when you stopped the yasmin, (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) I would do a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.
If you did have the withdrawal bleed, then we wouldn't expect another period for 5-6 weeks, since women stopping the pill typically have their next period arrive 1-2 weeks late. ...Read more

Is Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) a good contraceptive pill for pregnancy as I am concerned I will get pregnant as it's a low dose pill?

All pills are good: Pills to protect against pregnancy--if taken correctly. It is best to take around the same time of day, every day. You also have the option to do continuous birth control and get no periods at all! Just skip the placebo pills, and go right to the next pill pack active pills. If you are a smoker, or have factor v leiden (a clotting disorder), I would recommend a non-hormonal birth control. ...Read more

Hi, im looking to go back on the contraceptive pill mainly for breast growth and weight gain. I was wondering if dianette and yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) do this?

Oral birth control: At 18, your weight and breast size have not reached normal proportions of adulthood. Oral contraceptives in low doses (such as Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) and others) will not effectively change your breast size or weight. You can try, but don't be disappointed if you do not see results to your liking. If you are sexually active, the "benefits" are limited to very secure birth control. ...Read more

Will birth control pills damage my thyroid even more than it is? I already have hypothyroidism and taking levothyroxine.

Birth Control: Doesn't damage your thyroid. The estrogen in the birth control pill will stimulate an increase in the amount of thyroid binding globulin (TBG) your body makes, so you may require a slightly higher dose of levothyroxine to compensate for the increased tbg. A similar phenomenon occurs during pregnancy. ...Read more

I have been taking birth control pills for 2 weeks (sprintec 1st week, Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) 2nd week) and have had continuous bleeding since yesterday. Is that normal?

I have been taking birth control pills for 2 weeks (sprintec 1st week, Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) 2nd week) and have had continuous bleeding since yesterday. Is that normal?

Yes: Having irregular bleeding in the first 1-2 cycles of birth control pills is common. That's because the hormones in the pill are coming into balance with the women's hormones. If a woman has this breakthrough bleeding after the 3rd cycle she may need a different pill. Since you changed pills between the first 2 weeks there's more chance of bleeding. Take pill same time each day helps prevent this. ...Read more

Would birth control pills like Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) treat oligomenorrhea even after you stop taking them? And for how long do you take them as a treatment pls?

Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol): I suggest you see an OB if you want to treat oligomenorrhea, but hormones and naturopathic remedies can help as well. The BCP effects are not there unless they are taken regularly, and are the current main treatment to keep periods regular. If you have PCOS you need to see a Gyne-Endo to treat your problem effectively ...Read more
