My strep b test came back positive im taking antibiotics now and when I go in labor will my baby be ok. I have four other kids and never had this.?

GBS Positive: All OB patients are screened for group b streptococcus (gbs) @ 35-36 weeks. If positive, it simply means you carry a bacteria that has been implicated with neonatal sepsis. In the past, we only treated moms @ risk for infection, preemies, or prior neonatal infections. Now, we protect the infant by giving abx in labor to prevent infection as a precaution. Your baby will do just fine, f/u with ob. ...Read more

Could taking antibiotics a week or two before affect STD test results?

Could taking antibiotics a week or two before affect STD test results?

Yes for some STDs: Some antibiotics are active against chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis and could cure the infection, making the test negative. Even worse, it might suppress the infection so the test is negative, but not cure it. However, antibiotics have no effect on viral STDs like herpes, HPV, and viral hepatitis. On the other hand, if you are at risk, don't delay testing because of this. ...Read more

Will taking antibiotics result in a negative pregnancy test and your period is a week late?

Will taking antibiotics result in a negative pregnancy test and your period is a week late?

Pregnancy/antibiotic: Ttaking antibiotics can "inactivate" oral contraceptives and therefore, increase risk of pregnancy. Pregnancy tests depend on fertilization (and implantation) of the egg into the uterus. The test would not be affected by antibiotics if the ovum was fertilized and implanted. Therefore, if taking antibiotics, use an additional method of contraception (condom/diaphragm) during that monthly cycle. ...Read more

Bladder infec.. Taking antibiotics.. Did a pee test while taking antibiotics.. Results negative w/ white blood cells.. Possible to still have infec?

Depends: It depends on how long after you started antibiotics the urinalysis was done. If you've finished antibiotics and still have white cells in your urine, then you very well could still have the infection. If you're still on antibiotics, I would at least wait until your're done before assuming the infection wasn't cleared up. If you're still having symptoms 4-5 days after starting abx, call your dr. ...Read more

Ecoli UTI test of today showed only few bacteries, no blood, while im taking antibiotics (5days) but im having worse strong burning sensation. Wbc is 25

Need a culture: At 5 days you probably need a different antibiotic if it is getting worse. Make sure they do a culture even if the urinalysis is negative. A simple dipstick test is not enough if your having symptoms. That will give you a much better idea of what your dealing with and what antibiotics will work. ...Read more

I had unprotected anal sex. I got burning urethra. No other symptom. Urine test negative. Taking antibiotics for possible UTI. Now semen is thick. Why?

STD?: Did you tell Dr you had a sexual exposure? Urinalysis does not identify most STDs / causes of urethritis (=burning urethra). Most common Gonorrhea & Chlamydia. Likely will need more specific testing. Semen viscosity varies by %s of other components in it, which are influenced by "prep" time--need time for pre-ejaculate secretion to have "thinner" ejaculate. STD prevention easy with CONDOM use. ...Read more

Lung function test was at 56%. Doc said it was because I'm sick. Still short of breath. Taking antibiotics and an inhaler. Said not asthma or copd.

Depends on test: Not sure what that percentage is. There are certain numbers on spirometry which you need to get before you say what lung function is.
In general yes you can have a decline in your "lung function" when sick. This will take 6 wks generally to get back to normal. Mostly not an issue for people with normal lungs to begin with. Need more info like fev1 and fvc the ratio is important as well. ...Read more

I'm 5 days into taking antibiotics for my cold (3 per day, 500mg amoxicillin) and I don't feel any better, is there anything else I can do?

Below: Many times the problem is a combination of bacterial and viral etiology
The antibiotic will help with the bacterial component, but the viral part will just "run its course".
This will take a few weeks, usually.

Continue to drink lots of fluids to loosen any secretions that you may have, and continue taking the antibiotic to complete the full course given to you. ...Read more
