Could taking antibiotics a week or two before affect STD test results?

Could taking antibiotics a week or two before affect STD test results?

Yes for some STDs: Some antibiotics are active against chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis and could cure the infection, making the test negative. Even worse, it might suppress the infection so the test is negative, but not cure it. However, antibiotics have no effect on viral STDs like herpes, HPV, and viral hepatitis. On the other hand, if you are at risk, don't delay testing because of this. ...Read more

Will pulmicort flexhaler 180mcg cause false negative in a methacholine test. I also take 10mg singulair (montelukast) daily. How does these affect the test?

Methacholine test: The methacholine test for asthma is a tricky diagnostic tool. There are many medications that interfere with its accuracy. Bronchodilators albuterol, salmeterol, formoterol and theophylline have to be withheld before the test. Singulair/montelukast has to be stopped for a day. Regular Pulmicort/ other steroid use before the test may also affect results. The test works best in untreated patients. ...Read more

Can being on antibiotics whilst doing a urine test affect the results? Done an sample whilst on antibiotics for a uti, still having symptoms

Should be helpful: If your symptoms are due to UTI and didn't improve on antibiotic, repeat testing is still likely to be useful by identifying bacteria resistant to the drug. Also discuss alternate diagnoses w/ your doctor, especially STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas) which can cause similar symptoms as UTI; also yeast or other vaginal infections. Many UTI antibiotics aren't effective for these. ...Read more
