I've been sick and taking painkillers every day for 5 days straight whether it would be Advil,Aleve, or Tylenol (acetaminophen). Is this bad? Head still hurts

Minimal Danger: Long term (weeks to months) use of painkillers can be a problem, but there is likely no great risk to using them for five days. The more concerning thing is that you are not getting better. I would advise you to see a primary care doctor to find out a diagnosis. ...Read more

Severe pain lower lumbar. Prescribed Acetaminophen/Codeine 300mg/30mg every 6 hrs; was told could take Aleve (naproxen) also, but unclear how many times per day?

2 twice a day: 2 twice a day is a reasonable/ recommeded dose. Conditions such as high blood pressure and kidney disease can alter the recommended dose of alleve. The med you are on is primarily a pain killer. You did not say what the cause of your pain is. That may also alter the medication dose and choice. ...Read more

4 day long migraine; been taking 500 mg naproxen every twelve hours and sometimes 720 mg with no relief. Any tips to get rid of this?

Visit your doctor: Migraine is often unresponsive to nsaids. When they aren't working, you may benefit from other specific migraine medications such as triptans. Your primary care doctor may feel comfortable using these medicines; if not, they can refer you to a neurologist who can help improve your migraine control. ...Read more

Really bad neck and back pain from a few nights of poor sleep. I have been taking one Aleve (naproxen) every 12 hrs past 2 days but still bad. Double dose?

Not unreasonable: I will often recommend an NSAID "burst", with aleve (naproxen) taken twice daily for a week or 10 days, sometimes at twice the otc dose. This is not a good idea if you have sensitivity to the medication, kidney issues, or so forth, but can be a safe and inexpensive way to relieve residual inflammation. If symptoms persist after the burst, however, a more in depth evaluation is often required. ...Read more

I sprained my wrist 4 mon. ago and developed a cyst. I have been taking Aleve (naproxen) every 12 hr for 4 mon. I have not had side eff. Could I hurt my heart?

High doses of NSAIDs: high dose non steroid pain meds like Motrin , alleve, Ibuprofen etc,can hurt your stomach, kidney and possibly the heart. If the cyst hasn't left yet got to the dr and have it looked at. It may be a ganglion and the nsaids won't help -will need to have minor surgery if thats the case. ...Read more

I've been taking ibuprofen every 3-4 hours for pain after wisdom teeth extraction. can I switch to Aleve (naproxen) now I took the last dose about 4 hours ago?

No: Ibuprofen dose interval is every 6-8 hours. I would wait 8 hours if you can then change to Aleve. You can alternate with tylenol (acetaminophen) if no liver issues to get more pain relief. Do not take Aleve and Advil - chose one or the other. ...Read more

Is it safe to take Advil (ibuprofen) multiple times a day if I was prescribed 500 mgs of naproxen every 6 hours? I am worried because the bottle of Advil (ibuprofen) says no

Advil (ibuprofen) + Naproxen: Both of these meds are considered NSAIDS which are notorious for causing GI problems (stomach bleeding), The maximum dose of Ibuprofen is 3.2 g, and Naproxen 1.5g daily. Do the math. There are other better ways of managing pain than taking same meds-NSAIDs. You need to consult with a doctor that specializes in pain for more information and medication adjustment. ...Read more
